This article expands on last week’s story about Lauren “Shorty” Johnson. Most of what appears below was transcribed directly from my tape recorded interview with Johnson in May 2004. My questions are in italics. His replies follow in plain text.

LINCOLN - The Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation kicked off the 2024 WanderNebraska Travel Adventure Program on Memorial Day weekend with many updates for its third year.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - More than 3,300 students Were recognized for their outstanding academic performance over the spring 2024 semester at South Dakota State University by being named to the dean’s list.

HARTINGTON - There have been some changes to the process of exhibiting quilts in the 2024 Cedar County Fair Quilt Show that Cedar County residents need to be made aware of in advance to the Fair being held July 17-21.

Cleo Waters was presented the award for Toastmaster of the Year 2024 for Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Toastmasters Club #6217 from President Sheila Ulrich at an outdoor event in Irene, S.D. Qualifications for this award include: enthusiasm for fellow members of the club, involvement with special events, incentives to boost club participation, accepting of assignments, willingness to contribute to club’s well-being, active participation, serving in all meeting roles.

YANKTON, S.D. – Two area communities will be hosting blood drives Monday and Tuesday of next week.

HARTINGTON - The Hartington Pony League team won three games the past week in Quad County Baseball League play with a 9-4 win over Plainview here on June 6, a 20-6 win over the Randolph Cardinals on June 5 in Randolph and a 28-2 win over the Summerland Bobcats on June 4 on the road.

PENDER – The Hartington Post 4 Junior American Legion baseball team took down Pender here at Dave Nitzschke Field 5-2 on June 10.

PIERCE – A busy and successful week propelled the Hartington 18U Penguins to a 5-7 record and a berth in the Class C Nebraska 18U Girls’ Fastpitch Tournament in Hastings early in July.

NORFOLK – Riley Sudbeck knows he has a lot of work to do if he’s going to make an impression on his new college football coaches The 2024 Hartington-Newcastle graduate signed a letter of intent this spring to play football for NAIA national powerhouse Northwestern.

CROFTON – Enjoy National Marina Days, a summerlong celebration, on June 15 at Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area near Crofton.

YORK – Mike Trader’s Annual Mid-America Basketball Camp will conduct five individual sessions this summer. The overnight and commuter camps for boys and girls will be June 30-July 3, at Central Community College (Platte Campus), Columbus, and July 8-11, at Doane University.
