2005: Hochstein helps Patriots advance to Super Bowl

HARTINGTON—Cedar Catholic Trojans beat arch-rival Wayne 59-38 and dominated two-time state champion West Point Central Catholic 66-49. The wins boost Cedar’s season record to an impressive 11-3.

FOXBORO, Mass. — Big games are becoming almost routine for Russ Hochstein.

The 6-4, 310-pound, Hochstein played a big role in helping the New England Patriots earn a dominating 4127 AFC championship game win over the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday.

The Hartington native, who played for Cedar Catholic High School and the University of Nebraska before making it to the pros, played in his second straight AFC Championship game. He will now play in his second Super Bowl.

WYNOT — The Lady Blue Devils kept up their winning ways with a pair of lopsided victories last week.

Wynot’s girls now boast an impressive 11-3 mark. The Lady Blue Devils are 3-0 in the Lewis and ClarkConference. Wynot is currently ranked seventh in Class D2 in NSAA power points. The Lady Devils are ranked eighth in the latest Omaha World Herald D2 poll.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Lady Wildcats fell behind early in their game against the Bloomfield Queen Bees on Thursday night, but came back to dominate the second half, as they went on to a big 64-41 Lewis and Clark Conference win.

A well balanced attack led by Amy Thoene with 11 points and Ashley Grube and Laura Wiebelhaus with nine points each. Ashley Grube and Melissa Mainquist led in the rebound department with eight and six boards respectively and Kylie Bakke had 3 steals for the Wildcats.

HARTINGTON — Long-time Cedar County News columnist John Thoene, Jr. will be honored Friday at a special retirement party open house.Thoene decided to put down his pen and retire from writing his weekly column for the News at the end of 2004.

SALT LAKE CITY — A former area resident was one of two people that died Tuesday when a small airplane crashed near the southern Utah community of Hatch, police reported on Wednesday.

The plane, a single engine Aero Commander 200 D, went down about 5:12 a.m. Tuesday just south of Hatch, Utah.

Pilot George Gautier, 49, of Hatch, and passenger Michael Hansen, 34, of Lehi, were killed on impact.
