Before Emory Graffis left for the service he asked Inger Kastrup to marry him. She accepted. While stationed in Hawaii, he sent her a birthday card: It read: “Sweetheart of mine -- Loving you means happiness and skies a bit more blue! Thinking of you means my thoughts are bright and happy, too! Greeting you just means I’m glad, to have a part. In birthday thoughts and wishes, when they’re for you Sweetheart! Emory.”

The fire siren blew at 7:05 p.m. Monday summoning local emergency crews to the scene of a mock accident just south of Hartington behind Grossenberg Implement. When the emergency crews arrived, they discovered a bus had collided with a grain truck and the bus had gone off the road and rolled on its side. Firemen had to determine how to best handle the situation, while ambulance personnel dealt with the mock victims.

HARTINGTON - The Hartington- Newcastle School Board approved the purchase Monday of a new $37,712 scoreboard for the school gym.

COLERIDGE – A Coleridge man is out of jail on bond while he awaits trial in October for a sexual crime against a child.

WYNOT - The Wynot Blue Devils knocked off one of the top teams in Class D2 football Friday as they downed the Howells Dodge Jaguars 32-20. This game featured the quick strike aerial attack of the Blue Devils against the ground pound offense of the Jaguars.

TILDEN – Hartington-Newcastle football traveled Sept. 8 to Tilden, still searching for its first win of 2023.
