School Board agrees to buy new scoreboard

HARTINGTON - The Hartington- Newcastle School Board approved the purchase Monday of a new $37,712 scoreboard for the school gym.

HARTINGTON - The Hartington- Newcastle School Board approved the purchase Monday of a new $37,712 scoreboard for the school gym.

The Daktronics scoreboard is being purchased through Meyer Signs of Yankton, S.D. The school looked at another proposal to buy a digital video scoreboard instead. The cost on that system was about $100,000 higher, so it was not a serious consideration, said HNS Supt.

A.J. Johnson.

The new board will go into the current gym at the school. The scoreboards currently in use in that gym, which are about 10 years old, will be relocated to the practice gym currently under construction.

Supt. Johnson told Board members a bus they ordered last spring is now in Hartington and was immediately put to use on a route Monday afternoon.

The bus is expected to replace a 2004 bus which is still in service. Johnson said he is unsure at this time if that bus will be used as a spare or if it will be sold off.

Another bus was used Monday to help the Hartington Volunteer Fire Department with an emergency practice drill. Johnson also gave the Board an update Monday on the building project.

The framing for the interior walls has been completed and quite a bit of the dry wall has been hung, he said. The plan is to have the transformer set in place soon so electricity can be used in the building. This will allow contractors to finish flooring and other interior projects, he said.

As work on the outside of the building progresses, the school bus lane will need to be closed for about a month so concrete work can be done before the weather turns cold, Johnson said. He has reached out to Holy/Trinity Cedar Catholic to discuss some possible options while the work is being completed.

Also Monday, the board approved an application for early graduation from Landon McIntosh.

High School Principal Corey Uldrich told the board eight new members were being inducted into National Honor Society this week to join the 12 current National Honor Society members.

The next Hartington-Newcastle School Board meeting is set for Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
