CREIGHTON – Hartington-Newcastle volleyball sandwiched a sweep over Creighton between a couple of losses at the Creighton Invitational Sept. 9, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 25-20 and 25-21 in the best-of-threesets match.

CREIGHTON – The Wynot Lady Blue Devils volleyball team picked up a pair of Lewis and Clark Conference wins last week.

Changes made to turkey hunting season

The Hartington 3-4 grade and 5-6 grade football teams played in their first games of the season Sunday afternoon at the Hartington Community Complex. The 3-4 grade team lost 33-6 to Homer, while the 5-6 grade team defeated Ponca 42-21. The teams compete each Sunday through the season.

GRAND ISLAND – The Nebraska State Fair announced continued attendance growth in 2023. The attendance at Nebraska’s largest annual event broke 300,000 for the first time since COVID, posting 8.5 percent growth over 2022 with 311,909 guests during its 11-day run ending on Labor Day.

HARTINGTON – The Hartington Library has several “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” award winners. Wren Becker, daughter of Eric and Katelyn Becker; Loretta and Marshall Derickson, daughter and son of Eric and Samantha Derickson; and Lucelly, daughter of Bonifacio and Heather Rodriguez Showen, all received a medal, a certificate of completion, a final prize and a free book from the library for their accomplishment.

HARTINGTON – Rev. Emil Gustav Andreas Christensen is considered to be the first resident Lutheran home missionary pastor in Northeast Nebraska and Southeast Dakota Territory.

HARTINGTON – Pastor Nels G. Tvedt, the first resident pastor in Northeast Nebraska, had many trials and tribulations. He came to this area in 1875 as an assistant to Pastor Emil Christensen, who was located at Gayville, S.D.

Rev. N.G. Tvedt became the first resident pastor serving from 18801907.

HARTINGTON – The need for spiritual guidance and a hunger for God’s word were strong in the hearts of Cedar County pioneers.
