Class of 1974
The Laurel-Concord Class of 1974 gathered recently at the home of classmate Marilyn (Eckert) Abts to celebrate their 50th year reunion. A total of 29 classmates spent the afternoon reminiscing and getting caught up on each other’s lives. A poster board was made remembering the nine classmates who are no longer with us. They are Anita Hanson, Mike Madsen, Randy Leapley, Sheryl Anderson, Marina Lenzen, Shirlene (Kardell) Boeckenhauer, Kirk McCoy, John Suber and Russell Anderson. Those on the committee who help with the 50th reunion were Kim (Chace) Dunklau, Marilyn (Eckert) Abts, Janis (Wallin) Pfingsten, Jeanne (Pippitt) Kardell, Connie (Nielsen) Kathol. HARTINGTON – Over 200 local students took part in the 2024 4-H Ag Innovators Experience - Protect the Plate Challenge through this past spring/ summer. This STEM-based activity challenges them to use their critical thinking skills to take part in solving real-world agriculture issues around food safety.

Gov. Pillen Declares State of Emergency for counties along Missouri River
LINCOLN – Governor Jim Pillen is acting proactively to mitigate the impact of any flooding that happens along the Missouri River. Today, he declared a state of emergency for those counties that abut the river, which will immediately free up state funds and resources, should the need arise. The proclamation confers authority to Nebraska’s Adjutant General to activate those resources, to protect lives and property.

Wayne State College alumni invited to submit work for juried alumni art exhibit
WAYNE – Wayne State College alumni are invited to submit original artwork for the Juried Alumni Art Exhibit being held in conjunction with Homecoming. The exhibit will run Oct. 4 through Nov. 13 in the Nordstrand Visual Arts Gallery, located in U.S. Conn Library on campus.

Wayne State Foundation names interim CEO
WAYNE – The Board of Trustees of the Wayne State Foundation (WSF), which provides financial support for the mission of Wayne State College, announces the selection of Melissa Nelsen to serve as Interim CEO beginning July 1st, 2024. Melissa currently serves as the Director of Major Gifts for the Foundation and she will succeed current CEO Kevin Armstrong, who is leaving June 30th for a new position in Omaha. The interim CEO appointment is in eect while a national search is conducted to fill the position.

Grasshopper awareness and control should be practiced now
Dry conditions the past few years have reduced, natural grasshopper population controls that thrive in warm, humid weather. While recent rains may have helped slow number growth, grasshopper populations may become an issue for pasture and hay crops as the summer continues if dry weather returns.
