1979: Storm causes crop damage for area farmers

FT. CARSON, Colo. — A number of young men from this area were at Ft. Carson, Colo., June 8-22 for the annual summer camp training for national guardsmen. They are members of the South Dakota National Guard.

HARTINGTON — Paul Scheckler has been hired by the Hartington City Council as a police officer. Scheckler was hired at the June 9 meeting and began work on Monday, June 25.

COLERIDGE — Coleridge will host an Independence Day celebration July 3-4 to include a parade, a tractor and pickup pulling contest, a demolition derby and a fireworks display.

HARTINGTON — Damage from last Tuesday’s late afternoon storm was spotty, according to reports.

Crop damage apparently was the worst northeast of Hartington and in the Randolph area, where hail was reported. All but 2 farm buildings were damaged on the Arlo Arens farm north of Hartington by the twister. At the Pleasant Valley corner at the Junction of Highways 84 and 81, strong, tornado-like winds blew down the east wall of a vacant metal building and caused minor damage to the Pleasant Valley Café. About a mile north of Coleridge, a center pivot irrigation system, belonging to Jon Milander, was upset when the storm passed through.

June 27, 1979 HARTINGTON — An ordinance authorizing the issuing of a $1.5 million in bonds was authorized Tuesday night by the Hartington City Council.

Proceeds from the bond issue will be used to finance a 40,800 square foot addition to the Hydraulic Component, Inc. plant.

HARTINGTON — Three Cedar County residents appeared before the Board of Commissioners Friday to discuss the upgrading of a minimum maintenance road.

Mrs. George (Jan) Haas, Dean Nordby and Norman Vogel told the board that a road located in Precinct 13 needed to be considered for upgrading. Currently under minimum maintenance, the three said that road is heavily traveled and necessary to some area farmers in caring for their livestock.

HARTINGTON — First District Congressman Doug Bereuter has scheduled office hours for Friday in Hartington. Bereuter staff member Rob Robertson will be at the Hartington Auditorium from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council June 13 heard several requests concerning plans for Governors’ Day, which is scheduled for Sept. 15. Alice Mahood of the Chamber of Commerce public relations committee talked to the council about plans for the event.
