COLERIDGE – Cedar County Communities for Kids is proud to spotlight Carol Benson. She is the owner and operator of Carol’s Child Care, LLC, and has been recognized by Nebraska Step Up to Quality for her commitment to quality child care and education. She completed a rating review and her program earned Step 3. Step Up to Quality programs go beyond state licensing requirements to better serve the needs of young children and their families and to prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond.

BELDEN – Voters recently received the chance to meet and greet the two candidates running for the District 2 seat on the Cedar County Board of Commissioners.

HARTINGTON – The Hartington City Council is hopeful a new interpretation of how federal funds can be used will help it win support for a rural water proposal.

LAUREL – Two vehicles were repossessed and moved from the home of a Laurel couple accused of murder.

WAYNE – Wayne State College’s An Evening of Choirs presents “On Beauty” an expression of beauty through song at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in Ley Theatre, located in the Brandenburg Building. The performance is free and open to the public.

COLERIDGE – The American Legion Post #114 and its Auxiliary Unit #114 held their monthly meeting April 1 at the Coleridge Community Building. The units jointly recited the Pledge of Allegiance and then they separated and held their monthly meetings.

GRAND ISLAND – The Nebraska Early Childhood Policy Leadership Academy, the state’s premier, early childhood leadership initiative, recently wrapped up its 2023-24 program in Grand Island. Jackie Steffen, Nebraska Extension Early Childhood Educator of Hartington and Jessica Lueth, Cardinal Kids Early Learning Center Director of Randolph, completed the six-month program alongside 22 other advocates representing early childhood and higher education, public health, nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and economic development entities. Steffen and Lueth join a network of nearly 150 PLA alumni working in communities throughout the state to strengthen Nebraska’s early childhood systems.

HARTINGTON – The March 28 Local Working Group meeting was hosted by Lewis & Clark Natural Resources District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The meeting provides a platform for producers, stakeholders, and partner organizations from Cedar, Knox, and Dixon County to participate in the NRCS conservation planning efforts, to provide input on prioritization of local resource concerns, and to make recommendations to enhance programs and practices available through NRCS. In attendance were 15 local producers and representatives from a number of conservation organizations, including UNL Extension, NE Game and Parks Commission, NE Forest Service, Ponca Tribe of NE, Santee Sioux Nation, and the Farm Service Agency.

Hartington-Newcastle student, Trynity Zach, was selected first chair first trumpet in the Class D All-State Band held in Kearney March 23.

The beginning of April brings us closer to the end of this year’s legislative session.

HARTINGTON – LifeServe Blood Center held a blood drive in Hartington March 28, with a great turnout of 41 donors registered and 43 units of life saving blood collected! The units donated at the blood drive can help save up to 129 lives.

HARTINGTON – Food Bank for the Heartland is partnering with Farm Credit Services of America to host a free Mobile Pantry in Hartington, Nebraska on April 24, from 4-6 p.m., or until food runs out, at the Cedar County Courthouse in Hartington.
