1939: Work to begin on Cedar County Fairgrounds upgrades

HARTINGTON —Work on the Cedar County fair grounds will start sometime in the coming week if men can be secured to work on the project, Emery Lubeley, county supervisor for WPA said Thursday. Included in the project will be the relocating of cattle and hog barns.
The present building will be moved farther south and rebuilt, Lubeley states.

HARTINGTON — Several people have presented a bug known as the Blister Beetle to the Agricultural Extension Office for identification and means of eradication. Blister Beetles apparently are doing a great deal of damage in gardens and in some cases have attacked corn fields.

HARTINGTON —Proverbial stormy weather for the Fourth of July missed Hartington, giving crowds opportunities to enjoy the day. With a high temperature of 95 degrees, many sought relief in pools near Hartington.
The week’s high temperature, however, came on the fifth when 96 degrees was registered. Both Tuesday and Wednesday temperatures showed a 30-degree range. The low on July 4 was 65, on July 5, 66.

MAGNET — Vanoy, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Westadt, sustained a severe injury to his foot Thursday in a mower accident. His grandfather was mowing weeds and did not see the lad. The boy’s leg was caught in the sickle just above the ankle and severed the cords and muscles in the lower part of the leg.

HARTINGTON — A new age restriction law passed by the last legislature will affect some local school children who planned to start in kindergarten or the first grade this fall, but who will not be old enough under the new age limit law.

HARTINGTON — It can be said that all five of the Goeden brothers are “in there pitching,” for the five sons of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Goeden are all baseball pitchers, and all of them are playing this season.
Baseball talent comes to the boys naturally. Their father is a former baseball player. He has been a pitcher in his time and has played every position except catcher at some time or another.
