1959: Bishop honors pioneers at St. John’s celebration

FORDYCE — “When we think of the privations of the pioneers as they sacrificed to build this church, we have a feeling not only of gratitude ,but also one of challenge, to continue their good works”, said the Most Rev. Gerald T. Bergan, archbishop of Omaha, at a dinner June 24 commemorating the 50th anniversary jubilee of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church here.

HARTINGTON — A total of 49,000 trees were planted on Cedar County farms this spring, according to reports from the Soil Conservation Service office in Hartington.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Golf Club will hold its annual 36-hole handicap tournament Saturday and Sunday, July 4 and 5. Eighteen hole rounds will be played each day.

The winner will be the golfer with the lowest net strokes, gross score less handicap. Wid Burney won last year’s tourney.

HARTINGTON — Mr. and Mrs. Hoing and their boys were enroute to Sioux City last Friday when they were involved in a truck-car accident at the intersection of highways 15 and 20. They were traveling east and the truck coming west when suddenly the truck driver turned south right in front of them.

There was no way in which to avoid the collision.

HARTINGTON — The Wagon Wheel Steak House at Laurel was the scene of the reunion of 29 of the original 43 members of the class of 1949. The twentieth reunion of this class, whose members graduated from Holy Trinity, was held Saturday evening, June 29. The evening of reminiscing was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It consisted of a cocktail hour and dinner, followed by a program with Roger Albers as master of ceremonies.

HARTINGTON — Firemen answered a call to the Gerald Meyer home about 11 o’clock Friday evening. A large stack of baled hay was burning. Neighbors who had sighted the fire and come to help, and the firemen carried about 500 bales to safety but about 1100 bales were lost.
