NRDs Encourage Well Owners to Address Concerns Early
HARTINGTON – The region has been experiencing lower than average rainfall over the last several months and one heavy irrigation pumping season could result in significant declines in groundwater levels. Dry conditions lead to increased irrigation use, which puts increased pressure on the groundwater resources of the district, and potentially results in decreased groundwater recharge. It is important to keep in mind how pumping may affect other groundwater users. Conservation of water resources should be a high priority for all.

Bow Creek Field Day explains importance of soil biology
CROFTON – More than 50 farmers, gardeners, crop consultants, and others interested in conservation convened June 29 at the Crofton City Auditorium to learn about the importance of soil biology and practices that can be implemented to promote soil health as part of the 2023 Bow Creek Field Day. A dynamic group of speakers addressed the group, featuring Dr. Elaine Ingham, founder of Soil Foodweb Inc., Jimmy Emmons, a regenerative farmer from Oklahoma, and Doug Steffen, a local producer, who is implementing best management practices to promote healthy soil biology.

Spring 2023 well measuring results released
HARTINGTON – The static water levels of 34 irrigation wells located throughout the Lewis and Clark Natural Resources District (LCNRD) are measured in the spring and fall each year. Groundwater levels measured this spring indicate that the levels have decreased on an overall comparison by 0.7 feet from the spring of 2022 with 22 of the 34 wells monitored showing a decrease.

With warm weather can come heat stress, so be prepared
Warm weather has returned and with it, the possibility for heat stress in animals. At especially high risk are animals on feed, like feedlot cattle, that are near harvest weights. While long lasting heat events can be deadly, with appropriate action, warm weather can be handled without too much issue.
