Yankton avenges early loss to Expos

WYNOT — After defeating the Yankton Tappers just under two weeks ago, the Wynot Expos dropped a 14-5 South Central South Dakota League contest Thursday with the visitors from the north.

The Tappers took the lead in the top of the first inning and never really looked back, leading 2-1 after the first and 7-1 in the fifth, and then used a six-run eighth to slam the door on the Expos and walk away with the win.

“We didn’t hit the ball very well,” Wynot manager Lee Heimes said. “And there is little chance you are going to win when you commit seven errors in a game — we really need to get focused and take care of our business.”

Yankton used a couple of runs in the opening frame on a two-out home run to stake the lead, but the Expos did manage to answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.

After Landon Wieseler drew a walk to open the home-half of the first frame, Heimes grounded into a fielder’s choice for the first out.

Jaelen Wieseler then stepped up and laced a double to center field, which sent Heimes all of the way around the bases to make it 2-1.

A single to right field by Peyton Wieseler moved Jaelen Wieseler to third base and left runners at the corners, but back-toback pop outs ended the threat.

Heimes doubled in the bottom of the fifth frame with his team trailing 7-1 and then moved to third base on a wild pitch with one out.

Peyton Wieseler hit a hard ground ball that was bobbled by the first baseman, putting Wieseler on first base and scoring Heimes. Devon Lammers singled on the next pitch to again put runners on first and third, but a single up the middle by Ryan Heimes forced out Lammers at second base and ended the inning.

Scott Morrison scored in the bottom of the sixth frame after reaching base on an error, leaving Wynot down 7-4, but a pop fly with the bases loaded stopped the momentum and the Tappers answered with a run in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to 8-4 before they exploded for the six runs in the eighth.

The Expos were set to travel to Crofton on July 3 to take on the Bluejays before traveling to Akron, Iowa, on July 7 and facing Freeman, S.D., in Wynot on July 9.
