LINCOLN – The destructive emerald ash borer has been detected in two more Nebraska counties – Lincoln County, home of North Platte, and in the Shubert area of Nemaha County.

COLERIDGE – The Coleridge Community Club invites everyone to pig out for a good cause.

On the east side of the highway just north of Laurel stands a monument to the 17 airmen who were killed when two B-17 bombers collided and crashed to the earth in August 1944. This was not the only crash in Nebraska. All told there were 56 crashes in Nebraska during World War II. The most deadly crash occurred in August, 1944 in Boyd County when 28 men were killed.

LINCOLN – The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting offers for nearly 2.7 million acres from agricultural producers and private landowners through this year’s Conservation Reserve Program Grassland signup.

CONCORD – A special family event is being planned at the Haskell Ag Lab.

DIXON – The 2023 Dixon County Fair was held July 12-16. The folowing are the 4-H results from area residents.

RANDOLPH – A Wausa man died in a three-vehicle crash on July 20 near Randolph.

HARTINGTON – The case of a Laurel woman accused of murder has been continued until November.

LINCOLN – The city attorney for both Laurel and Randolph, and the Cedar County Attorney are among seven applicants for the county court judge vacancy based in Hartington.

PONCA – Aaron J. Bensen, 53, Ponca, died unexpectedly July 1, 2023, at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s, Sioux City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life service was held July 25 at the Ponca Community Hall, Ponca. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Aaron Jeffrey was born Dec. 9, 1969, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Rodney Adair and Vera Jean (Andersen) Bensen. He grew up north of Maskell, on the family farm. He attended school in Newcastle, and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1988. Aaron then enrolled in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Ariz. He served stateside during the Gulf War until being honorably discharged in 1992. Aaron then moved to California for five years before moving back to Newcastle. He worked for Terra and Central Valley Ag, and local area farmers until 2002. He received his associate’s degree, and then owned and operated his own farm and did custom work for area farmers. For the past six years, he has owned and operated his trucking operation.

BELDEN – Roger John “Woppy” Wobbenhorst, 68, Belden, died July 17, 2023, at his home in Belden, after losing his battle with cancer.
