The Legislature gave secondround approval to the budget bills last week. This effort will allow the budget to be read on Final Reading, meeting the requirement to have it pass by the 80th legislative day. The budget would provide money for capital construction projects such as the Perkins County Canal Project and a new prison facility. Additional funds are appropriated to cover salary increases recently negotiated with the state employee’s union and for staff at correctional facilities and other 24/7 facilities that were experiencing dangerous staffing shortages. Worker shortages and competition also necessitated provider rate increases for nursing homes, behavioral health providers, developmental disability providers, and other Medicaid service providers.

HARTINGTON - A Laurel couple accused of murder both waived a formal arraignment and entered not guilty pleas in writing in Cedar County District Court.

The Cardinal Kids Learning Center held its graduation ceremonies May 10 for the students completing both the 4-year-old preschool program and the 3-year-old preschool program. RANDOLPH - The City of Randolph is facing legal action from a woman claiming she was traumatized after the city council threatened to impound her emotional support animal.

HARTINGTON – Chad David Mathiason, 49, Hartington, died May 9, 2023, at his residence under hospice care.

RANDOLPH – Mass of Christian Burial for Frances R. Lenhoff, 94, Randolph, was May 16 at St. Frances Catholic Church, Randolph, and was also live streamed on the funeral home’s website. Rev. Kevin Vogel and Frances’ nephew Rev. Jim Kunz were the celebrants. Christian Mothers Rosary was followed by visitation and a Vigil Service, all at the church.

Randolph Elementary Friends members Salle Robinson, Sarah Billerbeck, Becky Miller, and Sharel Olson mix up smoothies for teachers at Randolph Elementary as part of Teacher Appreciation Week last week. The group offered a small token of appreciation for each day during the special week.

RANDOLPH - The Randolph Woman’s Club enjoyed a tour of Pfanny’s Farm as part of its regular meeting Monday, May 8. As they transported members around the farm, owners Gene and Julie Pfanstiel spoke of the many plants and trees grown on the property and rental facilities available.
