She grew up in Plainview and went to elementary school there until she attended Notre Dame Academy, Omaha, for grades seven, eight and nine. After testing out of classes early, Jan studied abroad for her sophomore year of high school. Jan then attended Holy Trinity High School, Hartington, with the help of her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Don and Chris Cline who lived in Hartington, graduating in 1958.
