YANKTON, S.D. — Marvin Joseph Goeden, 96, Yankton, S.D., formerly of Crofton, died March 7, 2025, at Avera Majestic Bluffs Hospice House, Yankton, with his family by his side.
Mass of Christian Burial was March 13 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, with Rev. James Keiter officiating. Livestreaming of the services may be viewed at: https://server.attend.live/static/ event/o2vQA.
Burial was in the parish cemetery, with military rites by the Crofton American Legion Post 128, the Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard Riders.
Pallbearers were Marvin’s grandsons; Anthony DeBlauw, Jonathan, Andrew, Henry, Josh and Justin Goeden.
Honorary Pallbearers were all of Marvin’s grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Visitations and a wake service were March 12 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, and resumed one hour prior to the service at the church.
Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home and Onsite Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
Marvin was born to Frank and Frances (Schmitt) Goeden Feb. 24, 1929. He was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Menominee, and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Helena. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 11 Country School and St. Boniface Menominee Catholic School, graduating from Yankton High School in 1947. He worked at the Emery Heine farm until being drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and stationed at the Panama Canal. He received an honorable discharge April 6, 1953. He married the love of his life, Angela Gentrup April 20, 1954. After their marriage, they lived a short time in Williston, N.D., where Marvin worked construction. They moved back to the Crofton area where Marvin worked construction at Mount Marty for a short time and the next 23 years worked at “Kenney’s 24-Hour Truck Stop” in South Yankton. He later worked in the maintenance department at Sacred Heart School and at Mount Marty College until he retired in 1999.
Marvin enjoyed walleye fishing below Gavins Point Dam and pheasant hunting in his younger years. He enjoyed baseball games, ballroom dancing with his wife, playing cards with friends and family, an occasional casino visit, watching the TV show “Becker” and spending time with his family.
He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and a proud veteran of the United States Army and the Crofton American Legion Post #128. Marvin was devoted to his Catholic faith and to his church, St. Boniface (All Saints) Parish, serving on the Parish Council, was a lector and a member of the Holy Name Society.
He always had a big smile, a “one-liner” and a warm and gentle heart. Marvin is survived by his wife of 70 years, Angela; their four children, Rhonda, (Stan) DeBlauw, Kalispell, Mont.; Rolly (Doris), Randy (Marie), Rod (Ruth) Goeden, all of Crofton; grandchildren, Jessie (Brian) Aubrey, Raquel (Chris) Ranieri, Anthony DeBlauw, Annie (Nick) Lancaster, Lacy (Travis) Fry, Jonathan (Ashton) Goeden, Andrew Goeden, Henry (Jazmin) Goeden, and Josh and Justin Goeden; great-grandchildren, Logan and Landon Ranieri, Rex and Ryken Lancaster, Opal and Julian Fry, Sawyer, Ruby, Alice and Eve, Maverick, Bowen and Vera Goeden. Brothers, Gerard (Audrey), Duane, sisters, Charlotte (Andy) Kirkitelos, Elaine Corey and Leonette Murray; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother; brothers, Jerome and Earl; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ethel and Ray Havermann, and Dorothy and Roland Richard; brothers-in-law, Wayne Corey and John B. Murray; and sister-in-law, Janet Goeden.
