CHARLESTON, W. Va. — David G. Sudbeck, 72, Charleston, W. Va., died Dec. 8, 2024 at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston. A service will be held later in the spring. David was born Jan. 3, 1952, to Vernon and Bonnie (Jaeger) Sudbeck in Yankton, S.D. He graduated from Cedar Catholic High School, Hartington, in 1970. He then attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. In 1975, David become area director of Region IV, a community-based program for developmental disability in Bloomfield, and in 1980, Columbus. In 1983, he went to Baton Rouge, La., where he was facilities administrator of nursing home and community-based programs. In 1985, he moved to Charleston, W.Va., where he worked in behav ioral health. He initiated the process for the Hartley Program to promote patient advocacy in the hospitals for mental health throughout West Virginia. In 2008, David was ombudsman for Judge McQueen and Judge Bloom, serving the state of West V irginia until his retirement in 2020.
David is survived by his sister, Karen (Ed) Scodoris, Hartington; and friend and caretaker, Kyle Blackburn, Charleston W.Va.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Bonnie Sudbeck; two sisters, Brenda Bottolfsen and Diane Sudbeck; nephews, Joshua Bottolfsen and Jeff VnaderMark; and niece, Julie VanderMark.
