Jim Kusel HARTINGTON — Jim L. Kusel, 59, Hartington, died Oct. 15, 2024, at his residence.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. The family received friends Monday, at church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Jim’s urn bearer was his brother, Dean Kusel.

James Louis was born Nov. 28, 1964, in Osmond, to Wylie James and Eileen A. (Kleinschmit) Kusel. He grew up on a dairy farm west of Hartington. He graduated from Hartington Cedar Catholic High School. Jim first began working for Prince Hydraulics, Hartington, and then worked for seven years for Morgan Manufacturing, Yankton, S.D., as a welder. Jim was married to Stacie Marie Anderson. He worked as a welder and laser operator for Kolberg-Pioneer, which became Astec. Medical problems due to his diabetes prevented him from working at Kolberg’s. Jim then was able to work at Graham Tire in Yankton for four-five years and for TMA. Jim’s health forced his retirement at this time.

Jim loved Husker football, hunting and fishing on the James River. Jim enjoyed visiting with people and really loved watching his son, John, race his ATV.

Jim is survived by his wife, Stacie Kusel, Yankton, S.D.; a son, John Kusel and Jennifer Merkwan, Tyndall, S.D.; his mother, Eileen Kusel, Hartington; a brother, Dean Kusel, Hartington; three nephews, Tyler, Tanner and Trevor Kusel; and five great-nieces and three great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Wylie “Jim” Kusel.
