Dwight Sudbeck

BLOOMFIELD — Dwight J. Sudbeck, 63, Bloomfield, formerly of Bow Valley, died Sept. 16, 2024, at the Bloomfield Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Bloomfield. Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 21 at Holy Family (Sts. Peter and Paul) Catholic Church, Bow Valley, with Rev. Marcus Knecht officiating. Burial was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Bow Valley. Visitation was one hour prior to Mass Saturday at the church. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Dwight was born Sept. 17, 1960, to Marvin and Rita (Jansen) Sudbeck in Yankton, S.D. He grew up in Bow Valley on the family farm with many brothers and sisters. Dwight was diagnosed with a developmental disability when he was 3 years old. Although it affected almost everything he did, it did not define who he was. He met challenges head on and received a Certificate of Completion at Hartington Public Schools in1981. Dwight was able to read and write, and although he spoke few words, he always greeted others with a hardy “hi,” a wave or a handshake.

Following high school, Dwight received skill training at North Star Services in Bloomfield until 2020. They recognized his unique needs and provided him with supports for employment, residential care, and community inclusion. He operated his own business, “It’s All About Fishing,” and supplied fishing worms to businesses in Bloomfield, Bow Valley, St. James, and Captain Norm’s in Yankton. Following an illness in 2020, he resided at the Colonial Manor, Randolph, and most recently at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Bloomfield.

Dwight enjoyed family and holiday celebrations, birthdays and social gatherings. His favorite pastime was fishing along the banks of Bow Creek and the Missouri River with his brothers. When asked how big the catch of the day was, he tended to exaggerate a bit by using his arms to describe the incredible length. His other passions were puzzles, bowling, fireworks and watching old western movies. Dwight made an impact on those he encountered. He was kind-hearted, welcoming and had a great belly laugh!

Dwight is survived by his siblings and their spouses, Marty (Deb) Sudbeck, Bow Valley; Dona (Gary) Clune, Quitman, Texas; Bill Sudbeck, Hartington; Vicky (Maurice) Koch, St. James; Kay Sudbeck, Lincoln; Rhea (Roy) Hochstein, Bennet; Tom (Julie) Sudbeck, Yankton, S.D.; and Marlow Sudbeck; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Geralyn and Lois; and brothers, Rollie and John.
