HARTINGTON — Joe Merkel of Menominee filed as a candidate for the nomination of County Commissioner in the First District of Cedar County. He will be opposing Commissioner Joe Promes of Wynot, who is completing his fourth term in office.

HARTINGTON — Mark L. Felber, former Hartington newspaperman, who is the editor of the Wingfoot Clan, a publication of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, was recently awarded a Freedom Foundation medal.

HARTINGTON — The total assessed valuation in Cedar County for 1959 has shown a 4 1/2 percent increase over last year, according to figures from the office of County Assessor Edward Erickson.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge area school reorganization plan was approved in a special election Tuesday by voters in Coleridge and eight rural districts.
Voters in the rural school districts balloted 181-111 to merge with the Coleridge school district. The margin in favor of the reorganization was much larger in the Coleridge district where residents voted 266-25 for the plan.

HARTINGTON — Hartington residents sweltered in summer’s heat as the mercury soared to 100 degrees here twice the past week.
Monday and Tuesday the thermometer registered 100. Sunday and Wednesday there were readings of 96. The rest of the week the mercury stayed in the 80s during the day.

HARTINGTON — Ken Dahl of Wayne captured the Hartington Town and Country Club’s 12th annual Invitational tournament Sunday. Larry Walz finished one stroke back for second.

HARTINGTON — Hartington and the surrounding area received much needed rains this past week, totalling 2.66 inches.
The rains were a welcome sight to farmers in the area since some of the corn had been lying in dry ground the past three weeks and had not sprouted. On Tuesday 1.49 inches of rain fell here, bringing the total for the year to 6.23 inches, far below normal for the first six months of the year.
