HNS Board votes to raise lunch rates for next school year

Posted in:

Thank You

HARTINGTON — Meals at Hartington-Newcastle School will be a little more expensive next school year.

The Hartington-Newcastle School Board Monday voted to raise student lunch prices by 15 cents for next school year. Lunches for adults will only go up 10 cents, but adult meal prices went up twice last year.

Breakfasts for both students and adults will also go up 10 cents.

Superintendent A.J. Johnson said before looking at raising the rates, he called around to other area schools to fine out what prices they were charging. Johnson said he discovered 'a lot of area schools are above us in pricing.'

After Monday's vote, meals at Hartington-Newcastle School will now cost:

• 7-12 students $3.35

• K-6 students $3.05

• Adults $4.70

• Student Breakfast $2.05

• Adult breakfast $2.85

Part of the reason for the increase is a slight increase in the cost of milk. The Board approved a milk bid Monday from Hiland Dairy. The bid came in a one-half cent per carton more than last year's price.

The School Board also agreed Monday to extend the contracts for four teachers who are now teaching summer school. Seventeen day contracts were given to: Susan Anderson, Maddie Sudbeck, Julie Steffen, and Ladonna Kneifl to teach summer school.

Non certified employees will also be getting a raise next school year. Johnson said the cooks, custodians and paraprofessionals at the school will all see on average a three percent raise.

In other action Monday, the Board decided to spend $76,133 on new lighting and $68,112 on a new sound system for the stage in the new gymnasium. Both the sound and lighting are being purchased from Theatrical Media Services of Omaha. The stage in the new addition will now become the main stage for the school, Johnson said.

Johnson also gave Board members an update on the nearly complete addition project at the school.

Johnson recently had a walk-through inspection of the new addition with RaDec Construction officials.

'There is a small list of items that need to be worked on, yet,' he said.

Johnson said he expects to be able to have everything done and the school should be able to take possession of the addition at the end of June or in early July.

'The Summer custodial crew has been busy getting things prepared to move onto the new addition just as soon as we can get in to it,' he said.

At that time weight lifting students will also be asked to help move items into the new addition, so the move can be done quickly and efficiently, he said.

Johnson said the concrete on the south of the new addition is expected to be poured later this week. The concrete will connect the school to the new playground.

The next Hartington-Newcastle School Board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the school's consumer science room. Johnson said board members are expected to review several policies at that meeting.
