New consumer science teacher fits right into the fabric of Cedar

Posted in:

HARTINGTON – As a child, Grace Pinkelman would often play school with her siblings.

School and teaching are no longer a game for the Oakland-Craig High School graduate, though.

She began her first year of teaching family and consumer science at Cedar Catholic Jr.-Sr. High last week.

This is her second year of teaching. She previously taught family and consumer science at Blair High School.

The Oakland-Craig High School graduate is familiar with Cedar Catholic because of the football rivalry that has developed between the two schools over the past several years.

The 2023 Wayne State College graduate met her future husband — Cedar Catholic graduate Josh Pinkelman — while standing in line at graduation.

The couple was married here just last weekend.

Among other things, she plans to teach her students how to hand sew and machine sew. She will also will be teaching a Junior and Senior Culinary class.

Teaching others seems to be a natural fit for her, she said.

“Growing up I knew I wanted to be a teacher,” she said. “It helped that I had a few really inspirational teachers in high school.”

She said she is really going to enjoy not only getting to know the students, but being able to teach them life-long skills, too.

“I have many great memories in the kitchen with my mom and grandma, so when I discovered I could teach lifelong skills as a career, I knew that was the perfect fit for me,” she said.

While she’s not teaching, she stays quite busy cooking up new recipes. And when she’s not in the kitchen or sewing room, she enjoys working out and being with family.

In the past, she has helped coach 7th-8th grade boys basketball, 7th grade girls basketball and high school girls basketball. She doesn’t plan on being involved in coaching here, however.
