Marvelan LaRae Schultz was born Aug. 13, 1948, in Laurel, at Olmstead Maternity Home, to Vernon Leroy and Berniece Mae (Carlson) Schultz. She was the second of two children. The family lived in Wakefield and eventually moved to Laurel, where she would grow up as a hearty Nebraska farm girl, doing chores and tending to the animals she would love all her life. Marvelan graduated from Laurel High School in 1966, after which she attended Wayne State College, majoring in home economics. After graduating with her degree, she moved to Omaha, where she took her first job with Douglas County, and later the State of Nebraska for the Department of Health and Human Services, where she was a caseworker for 43 years.

Marvelan always loved animals, having had a myriad of adored pets over the years. She was also known for baking cakes and making mints for special occasions - both for family members and anyone who asked. She was also a talented seamstress and made or altered dresses and other garments, sometimes for extra money, but usually just to be helpful. Each year her friends, neighbors and loved ones looked forward to the beautiful sequined calendars she made as Christmas gifts. Marvelan was an avid fisherwoman and spent many summer hours on the lake with her father on their family vacations to Minnesota. She very proudly cleaned her own fish.

She was always dedicated to her family, often visiting her parents in Laurel. She was also very close to her nephews, cousins, grandnieces and co-workers. Although she was rarely the center of attention, she was always there to lovingly support others at their weddings, graduations and other events. Marvelan returned to make her home in Laurel when she retired in 2014. She remained a part of the Laurel community until her death.

Marvelan is survived by her brother, Richard; her nephews, Richard and Robert (April); grand-nieces, Maycie, Zerlina and Azalea; cousins, Diane Sasse, Shelly Frevert (Brian), Renee Carlson (Greg Brown), Kerri Anderson, Drew Sasse, Danielle Sanchez (Carlos), Sarah Brown, Brandy Miller (Nathan), Brittney Fitch (Eric), and Brad Frevert (Jenny).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Berniece; her grandparents, Richard and Edith Carlson; her aunt and uncle, Fred and Loreene Gildersleeve; and her nephew, Matthew.
