Local man seeks election to state soybean board

LINCOLN – A Randolph man is seeking a seat with the Nebraska Soybean Board.

Mike Korth is seeking to represent District 1 which includes Antelope, Boyd, Cedar, Holt, Knox, Madison and Pierce counties. He will face off against Anne Meis, Elgin, who is the incumbent.

Korth has been a Cedar County farmer for 50 years with previous board experience, having served on the Nebraska Soybean Board previous for 12 years, the United Soybean Board for nine years, as well as the National Biodiesel Board now known as Clean Fuels Alliance America, among other boards.

Korth said as a board member his aim would be to develop and guide new uses for soybeans, expand markets through new export partnership and increase domestic and in-state demand.

“I’m always on the lookout for the next home run when it comes to new uses for soybean meal and oil,” he said. “I believe the next big use is out there, and we need to research and find it.”

Ballots have been mailed to soybean farmers residing in the district and should be postmarked for return by July 31 to be counted.

“Active participation in NSB elections ensures that farmers have a direct impact on the future of the soybean industry in Nebraska,” said Andy Chvatal, NSB executive director.

Election results will be announced in August. The nine-member Nebraska Soybean Board collects and disburses the Nebraska share of funds generated by the .5 percent net sales price per bushel of soybeans sold. Nebraska soybean checkoff funds are invested in research, education, domestic and foreign markets, including new uses for soybeans and soybean products.
