Crofton Dam Race to be held July 27 at Lewis and Clark SRA

CROFTON – The public is invited to Crofton for a “dam” good time this weekend.

The 2024 edition of the Crofton Dam Race is set for July 27 at Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area.

“If you’re here for a high five and a good time, then you’re probably at the right race,” said Heidi Marsh, one of two race directors along with Johnnie Ostermeyer.

The unique adventure triathlon along the shores of Lewis and Clark Lake has grown to become a major draw for racers of all skill levels from Nebraska and beyond and is gearing up to host nearly 300 participants this year.

Marsh said the Dam Race has seen participants from 24 states so far during its history.

“We have a great representation from across the country who travel for our race,” she said. “They love that community support. They say over and over again how much they love just the vibrant community that comes out and greets them.”

Racers — either as individuals or teams — will start the triathlon at the Lewis and Clark SRA by kayaking 1.5 miles on the lake in place of an open water swim, then running a 5K through the Weigand Area Campground and finishing up by bicycling 12 miles along scenic, rolling Missouri River hills into Crofton.

Marsh said the Dam Race continues to gain popularity largely due to the triathlon’s unique lineup.

“Our keystone event for the race will always be the sprint triathlon because it’s very unique,” she said. “It’s accessible. It’s a fun race for people of all (skill) levels.

“We have beginner racers — newbies, families — but then we also have some elite racers that still travel for our race,” she said. “That sprint triathlon is really, really special.”

Marsh said triathlon participants feel proud of themselves after crossing the finish line.
