HARTINGTON — Two hundred and thirty-four Cedar County eighth graders will receive their diplomas at promotion day exercises.
Miss Dorothy Lammers, District 35, and Keith Burney, District 18, will receive medals for being the highest ranking girl and boy in the county.
May 13, 1943 HARTINGTON - A lonesome navy Seabee, far from his friends and home in Cedar County, was walking down the street of an army post somewhere in New Caladonia when his glance wandered through the window of a headquarters building. What he saw brought him to an abrupt halt. Then he dashed through the door.
”Where did you get the Bank of Hartington calendar?” asked Lawrence Frerichs, son of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Frerichs of Coleridge.
“Is there anyone from Hartington here?”
A soldier told him that there was a Hartington man working in the office. Then he called Tech Sgt.
Fredric Stevens, a former Bank of Hartington employee, who has been stationed at New Caledonia for a considerable time.
Although Frerichs and Stevens had never met before, they enjoyed a session about the folks back home.

HARTINGTON — Bonnie Jordan was named valedictorian of the Coleridge High School class. Palmer Root was named valedictorian at Belden High School.

HARTINGTON — Ellwin Jordan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jordan, received a brain concussion, lacerations, internal and back injuries in a car accident. Other people in the car including LeRoy Dooley, Allen Constable, Doris Asbra and Delores Wuebben were also injured.

HARTINGTON - An additional 21 Cedar County young men, many of them recent high school graduates, have been ordered to report to an army induction station June 8 for final physical examinations, Ludvig Nedergaard, county draft board secretary announced.
Those ordered to report are: Lester J. Schneiders, Reuben C.
Swan, Lyle J. Sendel, Paul W. Kleinschmidt, Harold E. Werthmann, Clement W. Jorgens, James A.
Stockwell, Don E. Strivens.
