Six LCC athletes earn trip to this week’s State track meet

HARTINGTON – Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will be sending several Bears and Lady Bears to Class C’s Nebraska Track and Field Championships May 19-20 at Burke Stadium in Omaha.

HARTINGTON — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge will be sending several Bears and Lady Bears to Class C’s Nebraska Track and Field Championships May 19-20 at Burke Stadium in Omaha.

The athletes advanced to the State meet after performing at the District

C-4 meet at the Hartington Community Complex on May 11.

Cedar Catholic won the boys’ team title with 119.33 points to overshadow Ponca with 85 and the Crofton girls won the title with 103 points to outlast Cedar Catholic with 92.

The Bears finished fourth with 58 points while the Lady Bears were eighth with 36.

Dan Puppe had his hands in 36 of the LCC points for the boys with a win in the pole vault and 110-meter high hurdles, and a third-place showing in the 300 hurdles. He ran a leg in the 4-by-100 relay, which placed first.

“I wanted to get the school record in the pole vault,” Puppe said. “I’ll have my name up there three times now and I don’t think anyone else has that many.”

And he broke the record on a borrowed pole.

“We got a new pole to begin the season and it just wasn’t working out,” he said. “We had another

14-footer I was using, but I ran through it and the Crofton coach said they had one no one was using so I gave it a try — I guess it worked out pretty good.”

Puppe cleared 12-feet-9-inches to break the record and he did it on his final attempt at the height.

He also won the 110 hurdles in

14.84 seconds and earned the bronze in the 300s in 41.35, which still quali- fied him for Omaha despite missing the top two in the event.

He got in on a wildcard, so to speak, which goes to the next fastest times from the District meets across the state. There are 18 automatic bids and six “next-fastest” bids to make the field at 24 in the running events.

The 4-by-100 team of Puppe, Shane Benson, Gibson Roberts and Carter Kvols circled the track in 45.34 seconds to grab the gold in that event and send the quartet to Omaha.

Although Puppe and the relay were the only qualifiers, several other Bears had productive days.

Kvols placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:06.76, while Caleb Erwin was fourth in the long jump, hitting the sand after leaping

19-feet-3.5-inches.

Tyler Olson placed in the two dis- tance races, taking fifth in the 1,600 and sixth in the 3,200 in 5:04.56 and

11:09.80, respectively.

The Lady Bears were paced by Tali Erwin and Berniece McCorkindale.

Erwin was an automatic qualifier with a silver in the 100 hurdles in

16.68 seconds and a silver in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-01.

She just missed in another event, placing third in the 300 hurdles in

50.23.

McCorkindale placed second in the shot put with a toss of 36-09.50 and placed sixth in the discus with a hurl of 101-05.

Julia Johnson was fourth in the pole vault after clearing the bar at

7-08 and Brynlee Stanley also placed in the high jump with a best of 4-05.
