LAUREL - Randolph traveled a few miles east on April 17 to compete in the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational golf tournament at Cedar-View Country Club and used a team score of 368 to place 6th in the 16-team tournament.
The Cardinals were led by Ryan Engel, who carded an 87, which put him in 12th place individually after a scorecard playoff with Blayne Williams of Tekamah-Herman, who also shot an 87.
'I had a pretty good round, but I left some shots out there,' Engel said. 'I had a couple of birdie putts lip-out. My putting could have definitely been better, but it was a pretty good round.'
The Cardinal, who also played for Randolph on the hardwood, likes the similar characteristics of both sports.
'I feel like golf and basketball have some of the same things you need when you're playing the sports,' he said. 'You keep practicing until your muscle memory kind of takes over and then you take it to the next step.'
Engel's goals for the season are very clear. 'We want to get to Columbus for state as a team, that's the goal,' Engle said. 'We'll keep working towards that.'
Tekamah-Herman won the team title shooting a 330, Ponca was second at 336 and Cedar Catholic took third with a 348.
Tekamah-Herman's Brody Rogers was the medalist on the day carding a 74, Jace Wahls from Ponca was second with a 78, Rogers' teammate, Griffin Breckenridge was third at 79 and Ponca's Landon Uthof ended up fourth after a scorecard playoff, also firing a 79.
Chasing Engel for the Cards were a pair of Cardinals at 90 and two at 101.
Shaw Backer and Bentley Reimers each carded a 90, and Logan Lienemann and Tate Broderson came in with a pair of 101s.
The Cards are set to return to the links April 26 when they will travel to Rolling Hills Golf Course for the Osmond Invitational before hosting a triangular on April 28.
