75 Years Ago - April 20, 1950
RANDOLPH – Two hundred choristers and one hundred band musicians are expected here from eight schools Tuesday, April 25, for the fourth annual Music Festival, sponsored by the Music Boosters club and Randolph High School.
The music Festival, first held in 1947, has grown in popularity each year and has become one of Randolph’s outstanding musical events.
Guest conductors this year will be George Iseminger, Sioux City, Ia., for the 200-voice chorus, and Dale Caris, Sioux City, Iowa, for the 100-piece band. Both are on the Sioux City East high school faculty. Mr. Caris is one of the Midwest’s most widely known high school band directors and his marching bands have been state champions in Iowa for a number of years.
60 Years Ago - April 15, 1965
RANDOLPH – John Hill, Randolph High Vo-Ag instructor accompanied several members of his FFA class to the State FFA Judging Contest and Convention held at Lincoln on Thursday and Friday. At present he has not received all the results of the judging of the Randolph FFA members.
On the Management Team were Dick Stamm and Kenneth Eberhardt. Kenneth Eberhardt received a red ribbon on individual judging and as a team they received a white ribbon.
Roger Young, Kenneth Eberhardt and Darrell Brodersen participated in the Dairy Cattle Selection. Roger Young received a blue ribbon. *** RANDOLPH – Don Bermel of Randolph presented purple ribbons to Jack Adkins of Osmond and Barbara Wattier of Randolph. The pair were top award winners in the Pierce County Timely Topics Contest held at Osmond April 5. The two 4-H’ers are eligible to represent Pierce County in the district contest at Wayne.
50 Years Ago - April 17, 1975
RANDOLPH – The Randolph City Council and the Rural Fire District representatives heard 15 different bids at the opening for the new Fire Hall and Rescue Station on Tuesday night at the City Auditorium.
Only two bidders submitted combined bids for the project with Paul Borst Construction of Randolph besting RADEC Construction as the local contract submitted a bid of $86,466.00. The RADEC firm bid $87,000.00.
The City Council and the Rural Fire District representatives will study the bids along with the Engineers and Architects and make their decision pertaining to the official bid acceptance or rejection at a later date. *** RANDOLPH – New officers for the 1975 year were elected by the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department on Monday evening during their regular meeting.
Assuming the presidency is LaVern Scott with Neil Lackas elected as Vice President and Pat Kaiser, Jr., secretary. Herb Sauser was re-elected chief of the department as Russ Van Slyke and Dave Winkelbauer retained their offices of assistant chief and salvage chief, respectively.
40 Years Ago - April 18, 1985
RANDOLPH – The Randolph Centennial Committee picked Joe Brandl’s entry on Monday night to use as the logo during the city’s centennial observance. Plans are that the committee will allow the logo to be used for promotion material and other advertising that the group will be doing in readying for the July of 1986 celebration. The dates set by the committee for the official observance of the 100th birthday of Randolph is July 11-15, 1986.
Brandl’s efforts will be rewarded with a $100 savings bond. The committee chose Brandl’s entry over about 25 entries that were offered for consideration.
The entry itself that Brandl designed includes the motto “Randolph Century Days of ’86,” along with an outline of what a person sees as he is approaching Randolph from the east along Highway 20. The banner or ribbon across the bottom portion of the logo appears to be crossing Highway 20. *** RANDOLPH – Following about seven and one-half hours of meetings over different nights, the Randolph City Council is right back where they started as far as accepting an insurance bid.
On Tuesday night the council was scheduled to open bids, as advertised, for the insurance package. Following a five and one-half hour session in which they received proposals from two agencies, they accepted First State Agency’s presentation over Town and County Agency’s proposal. Following the acceptance of the First State Agency’s proposal and adjournment an irregularity pertaining to the rating of one of the companies used as a carrier was discovered, which prompted an emergency meeting on Thursday night.
On Thursday night the council voted to rescind their action in accepting the bid as presented. They also voted to reject the bid of Town and County Agency and decided to re-advertise for bids, allowing some changes in specifications for bidders to follow.
30 Years Ago - April 19, 1995
RANDOLPH – Randolph school board members took action following executive session to discuss personnel Monday, April 10.
Members voted to adopt contracts with teachers for 1995-96 school year.
Principal pay increases were given. Elementary principal Gary Speer received $1,500 pay increase. High school principal Ron Hes received a $750 increase.
Members were divided on a decision to repeal the policy which prevents the wife of the superintendent from applying for and being hired for a teaching position. *** RANDOLPH – Assuming duties as Randolph Area Ventures Inc. executive director is Vonnie Arens after Carmen Shaffer’s resignation to pursue other interests.

RANDOLPH – Plans are underway for the annual Randolph Junior-Senior High Prom, Saturday, April 23. The theme for this year’s event will be “Wonderful Tonight.”
Selected as Queen candidates are Danielle Alderson, daughter of Rick and Vicki Alderson; Gina Korth, daughter of Jack and Lori Korth: Genny Graf, daughter of Rich Graf and Lori Whalen; Melissa Schmit, daughter of Paul and Corrine Schmit; and Megan Massey, daughter of Phyllis Massey and Dennis Morgan. Senior King candidate named are Ben Loberg, son of Paul and Julie Loberg; Blake Anderson, son of Mark and Tracy Anderson; David Arens, son of John and Sue Arens; Nolan Whalen, son of Dave and Rhonda Whalen; and Ronnie Graf, son of Rich Graf and Lori Whalen. Crown bearers will be Cindy Haselhorst, daughter of Dave and Anna Marie Haselhorst; and Scott Lodge, son of Mick and Pam Lodge. *** RANDOLPH – The second annual TeamMates Walk-a-Thon kicked off Sunday with over 4,000 walkers from over 50 Nebraska communities walking for one hours’ time in order to support the program created by Tom Osborne in 1991.
Though Randolph area citizens participated in the previous walk, this was the first year the walk was held locally in this community. For the first annual walk, walkers wishing to support TeamMates started in Norfolk to walk in support of this mentoring program.
The purpose of the program is to get an adult mentor and youth mentee to work together as a unit in an effort to enrich the mentee’s life and send them out into the world as productive, well rounded adults.

RANDOLPH – Spring weather is here and area youth are making the most of it.
Monday, April 13, was the first soccer game of the season for the newly founded soccer organization here in Randolph.
A group of soccer enthusiasts worked together to get this started back up in Randolph after years of inactivity. *** RANDOLPH – Seventeen-yearold Caitie Lemmons was selected as the 2015 Girls State representative for Randolph High School.
Randolph will not have a Boys State representative this year as no applications were filed.
“I am most interested in learning about Nebraska’s unique legislative system,” Lemmons said. “I have also been told it is a great opportunity to make many new friends so I am looking forward to that as well.”
