1985: The Drug Store will move to new location

LAUREL — The Laurel track team competed in the Norfolk Triangular. Matt Johnson set a new school record with a jump of 41’0” in the triple jump.

LAUREL — Candidates for degrees at Wayne State College are Lisa Anderson, Mark Anderson and Clayton Erwin.

April 24, 1985

LAUREL- The Laurel-Concord Board of Education voted 4-2 to reduce the English department in the secondary school from three positions to two for next year and to terminate the contract of Dr. Alan Lemke to achieve that reduction.

The decision followed a marathon public hearing Tuesday which began at 8 p.m. at the school but stretched into the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

About 100 community members, including most of the teaching staff, many parents and a few students started out at the hearing and more than a third of those still remained when it adjourned at 1:45 a.m.

April 24, 1985

LAUREL — The Laurel Advocate received recognition among the top weekly newspapers in the state last weekend, winning three awards in the annual Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The Advocate placed second among weekly papers with circulation under 1,500 for use of color in advertising. The paper’s entry included a St. Patrick’s Day coupon offer and a Memorial Day advertisement.

LAUREL- The Drug Store in Laurel will soon be relocating to a site on Highway 20 following an announcement last week that its owners, Dr. Keith and Janeen Berg, had qualified for a $25,000 Community Block Grant. Department of Economic Development director Don Dworak and Governor Bob Kerry last week signed papers authorizing the release of the funds to the City of Laurel. The city will in turn loan the money to the Berg’s who will repay it at 5 1/4% interest over 15 years.

April 24, 1985

LAUREL- Chad Blatchford of Laurel has been selected to attend the 17th annual Junior Law Cadet Program June 10-14.

The camp is held each summer at the Nebraska State Patrol Training Academy in Lincoln.

Chad, a Laurel-Concord High School junior, is the son of Darrell Blatchford and Mary Blatchford, both of Laurel.

April 18, 1990

COLERIDGE — The new sign at the end of West Broadway and Highway 15 was put in place several weeks ago. The lighted sign was badly needed to replace the old one torn down when the State regraded the roadway this past summer.

COLERIDGE — A benefit for the Janet Jansen family will be held tonight, Wednesday, April 18, at the Coleridge Community Building. The Jansen family lost their home and belongings in a fire recently.

April 26, 2000

COLERIDGE — Joel Bruning set a new school record with his 50’1” effort in the shot put in the Beemer Invitational at Wisner.
