1960: Voters narrowly reject swimming pool bond

April 17, 1960

HARTINGTON — The proposed $50,000 bond issue for the construction of a municipal swimming pool in Hartington lost by four votes in Tuesday’s city election.

Although the swimming pool received a majority of the votes in the city’s two wards, it lacked .67 of one percent of receiving the necessary 60 percent required by law.

The vote was 328 “for” and 225 “against”.

April 17, 1960

HARTINGTON — Joint installation ceremonies of the Hartington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary were held at the VFW clubroom here Monday night.

Edwin Fuchtman was installed as commander of the VFW post and June Martens as president of the VFW Auxiliary.

Other VFW officers installed were: Pierce Rohde, senior vice commander; Leo Schulte, junior vice commander; Reinhold Burbach, chaplain; Paul Dendinger, service officer; M. L. Gertsch, adjutant and Lawrence Obermeyer, quartermaster.

Merton Olson of Hartington, state department junior vice commander, installed the VFW officers. Local officers not present for the installation were Max Goetz, judge advocate; Dr. James Allan, surgeon; and Jerome Schulte, trustee.

Other Auxiliary officers installed were Evelyn Meyerott, senior vice president; Gayle Obermeyer, junior vice president; Theresa Noecker, conductress; Opal Rohde, secretary; Dorothy Noecker, treasurer; Marie Walz, patriotic instructor; Betty Luch, chaplain; Joan Kruger, Pat Bertrand, Dorothy Noecker and Marsha Burbach, color bearers; Irene Berg, flag bearer; Shirley Pembrook, banner bearer; Velma Berglund, three year trustee; Betty Jacques, historian and Ethel Reifert, musician.

Marie Walz, former Auxiliary president, installed the officers.

April 17, 1960

HARTINGTON — Three Hartington girls received superior ratings at the University of Nebraska Fine Arts Festival in Lincoln last Thursday.

Sue Beuck of Holy Trinity high and Bonnie Lange of Hartington public school both received superior ratings in oral interpretation of prose literature. Donna Boehmer, also of Trinity high, received superior in original oratory.

Trinity students receiving excellent were Larry Rupiper, interpretative public address; Mary Foecke, poetry; and the drama reading group composed of Jane Kramer, Vickie Forinash, Carol Rossiter, Nancy Hausmann and Tom Petsche. Kay Miller received a good rating in extemporaneous speaking.

James Weir of Hartington high received an excellent in discussion and Carol Preitauer a good in poetry reading.

Directors were Mrs. Marcella Nedrow of Hartington high and Sister M. Terrance of Holy Trinity.
