OMAHA — Three area athletes were named this week to their respective All-State basketball teams by the Omaha World-Herald.
Cedar Catholic senior Nolan Becker and sophomore Anisten Wortmann were both named to their respective All-State basketball teams.
Wynot senior, Andrew Haberman was also listed by the publication on the Class D2 All State Second Team for his performance in his final season on the Blue Devils’ hardwood.
Wortmann was named to the Class D1 AllState Second Team by the publication after being one of the reasons for Cedar Catholic’s success on the hardwood.
Two of Wortmann’s teammates and one junior also were named to the honorable mention list.
Wortmann was the engine that moved the ball up and down the court over the winter and scored when she had the chance.
She wound up averaging just over a dozen points per game in her second season on the Lady Trojan varsity, a statistic which will undoubtedly grow as she moves along in her career.
Wortmann’s performance was a reason the Lady Trojans had success this past winter, but she was far from the only reason.
Teammates Lauren Bernecker, Katelyn Arens and Addison Walter also played a huge part in the team’s late seson success. All three were named All State Honorable Mention.Becker averaged just under 16 points per game for Cedar Catholic in his senior campaign.
Bernecker, a four-year starter, was the glue that held the Lady Trojans together.
She led more by example and quietly kept her team headed in the right direction doing the little and big things necessary when they were necessary.
Rebounding and defense were right up Arens’ alley as she would outwork her opponent on the floor to get that one extra rebound or one extra possession that ended up mattering the most when the final points were tallied.
Junior, Addison Walter has the size to play inside and the talent to take her game outside as well. Her moves in the post presented problems for opposing teams, but not more than the problem she presented when she took her game outside beyond the arc.
Nolan Becker showed his skills every time he stepped onto the court.
“Nolan led our team in points and rebounds per game,” said Trojan head coach, Nick Haselhorst. “His experience and talents helped guide us to another strong season. He drew a lot of attention from opposing teams defensively because of his ability to score the basketball.”
Jaymison Cattau and Mason Baller joined Becker in post-season accolades, earning honorable mention by the World-Herald.
Cattau was a versatile player for Haselhorst and Cedar Catholic with the size to go inside and the talent to knock shots down from the perimeter.
“Jaymison led our team in assists and made 3-pointers. He was a tough match up for opposing defenses due to his combination of size, passing ability and perimeter shooting,” said Haselhorst. “Defensively, he was able to guard multiple positions and was often tasked with guarding one of the opposition’s top players.”
Baller, just a junior, grew into his role as the season progressed and flourished by the end of the year as a more than reliable defender, who also had the ability to shoot the ball when required.
“Mason was always tasked with guarding the opposition’s point guard or best scorer,” his coach said. “He was a pest in the front court and really set the tone for us defensively. Offensively he had some explosive moments scoring the basketball and is a very efficient shooter.”
Haberman was a part of a very balanced Wynot team that used its balance and tenacity while making a run all the way to the Class D2 state title game this past March.
The Blue Devils’ balance was indicated by the World-Herald as four of Haberman’s teammates were tabbed on the honorable mention list.
Joining Haberman were Devin Brummer, Kotner Koch, Killian Steinhaus and Justin Heimes.
