HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams had a very busy and successful week competing in two meets with the Trojans winning the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational April 8 before running away with the Ivan Krumwiede Invitational at Homer on April 11.
The Lady Trojans proved that what they lacked in quantity they made up for in quality, taking second in the Krumwiede meet.
The Trojans outdistanced runner-up Archbishop Bergan in Homer by over 100 points, posting 208.5 points on the day compared to the Knights with 98. In the Hartington-Newcastle meet, Cedar Catholic scored 150 points compared to their neighbors across the street who posted 95 for second place.
In Homer, the Cedar boys won eight events on the day.
“We were able to win both of these meets so we are improving,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Blair Kalin. “We are starting to develop some depth which is good to see and will help down the road.”
Three freshmen won golds in Homer, Joe Bowen in the 3,200-meter run, Micah Cattau in the 300 hurdles and Landon Rutar in the triple jump.
The 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams won in Homer along with Braeden Reifenrath in the 100, Kighter Wortmann in the 800 and Keyton Arens in the pole vault, clearing 12-feet.
“We finally had a good day to run, the weather was great,” said Wortmann. “You have to just keep motivated and concentrate on the next step. You always feel like you could have done better, but I’m pretty happy where I’m at right now. I just need to keep working and get better each day.”
Wortmann led a 1-2-3 finish in the 800 with teammates, Matthew Loecker and Alex Elks were right on his heels.
Elks would go on to second in the 1,600 and fourth behind Bowen in the 3,200. Bowen also placed fifth in the 1,600 behind Elks.
Overall, Kalin is happy with his team’s progress, but is quick to point out where the success is coming from.
“Our relays have been strong and that’s due in a large part to Coach Steffen (Steve), our jumpers are really coming along thanks to coaches Wendy Wortmann and Joe Ventry,” said Kalin. “Nolan Heimes is coming along in the hurdles, with the help of his brother, Owen, we are really lucky to have him helping. Our throwers are scoring some points, Keyton (Arens) cleared 12-feet in the pole vault and is looking to break the school record of 12-feet-8, if we keep working hard we can be where we want to be by the end of the season.”
Nolan Heimes was second in both the hurdle races, Jared Rutar was second in the shot and the discus.
The Trojans also won the team title in the invitational hosted by the Wildcats on April 8.
Reifenrath won the 100 and was second in the 200 in the meet. Mason Baller was sixth in the 200 and Booker Hochstein took sixth in the 100.
Cedar Catholic’s 400-meter relay team of Booker Hochstein, Cattau, Baller and Reifenrath broke the tape as did the 3,200 squad of Loecker, Nolan Becker, Wortmann and Hunter Kuchta.
Brady Hochstein was second in the long jump, Booker was third and Jared Rutar was second in the shot and discus.
Sam Wiebelhaus was third in the discus and fifth in the shot while teammate Graham Potts was sixth in the shot.
Cattau was fourth in the pole vault with Quinn Hochstein fifth.
The Lady Trojans were second in the Homer meet with 93 points, Homer won the meet with 109.
Anisten Wortmann is coming into form, winning both of the hurdle events and Lauren Bernecker won the 400 and was second in the 100.
The 3,200 relay team of Brynn Bernecker, Claire Rolfes, Madison Eickhoff and Kally Becker brought home a gold medal and the 1,600 squad of Eickhoff, Becker and the Bernecker sisters placed second.
“Our girls are getting contributions from everyone,” said Kalin. “They are setting personal records and we are led by Lauren Bernecker and Anisten Wortmann is starting to get healthy. Brynn Bernecker, Kally Backer, Madison Eickhoff and Claire Rolfes are really valuable in the relays along with Lauren. We are getting better.”
Claire Rolfes ran in the three distance races for the Lady Trojans along with her leg in the 3,200 relay.
She placed second in the 1,600, fourth in the 800 and one spot out of the medals in the 3,200 finishing seventh.
“It was a really beautiful day to run,” Rolfes said. “The main thing I concentrate on is getting the race done as fast as I can. You have to just keep the ‘going faster’ mentality. I just keep thinking I can go faster as I count down what’s left in the race.”
Rolfes also ran cross country last fall, but prefers running on the oval.
“In cross country sometimes you feel like you’re just out there in the middle of nowhere,” she said. “In track people are cheering for you and you know your are going to go by them two or four or eight times, it seems like it goes faster if that makes sense.”
“Yes, Claire ran all four long races in Homer,” said Kalin. “I give her credit, that takes a lot out of you and she competed hard in all four.”
Adelyn Reifenrath improved her triple jump by over a foot to place third and was sixth in the long jump. Kinleigh Kramer was third in the pole vault.
In the HNS meet, the Lady Trojans placed fifth after posting 64 points. Pender won the meet with 144 points with Wisner-Pilger second with 97.
Lauren Bernecker won the 400 and Wortmann won the 100 hurdles for Cedar and the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams placed second.
