LAUREL — The strength of a community is measured by how it cares for its families.
That spirit was on full display at the grand opening of Building Blocks last week, where a crowd of supporters gathered to celebrate a shared commitment to affordable, high-quality childcare.
With working parents facing tough choices due to childcare shortages, Building Blocks stands as a solution born from collaboration. By bringing together local leaders, state-wide partnerships, educators, businesses, and families, this center is proof of what happens when a community takes care of its own.
“This turnout speaks volumes,” said Amanda Christensen, Building Blocks Center Director “People recognize that quality childcare isn’t just a convenience—it’s a necessity. And today, we saw firsthand how much this community is invested in making that a reality.”
“This center isn’t just a place—it’s a promise,” said Megan Pippitt, Board President. “A promise that parents don’t have to choose between their careers and quality care. A promise that our children will have a strong start in life. And a promise that when we work together, we can create something truly lasting.”
The event featured powerful remarks from Jeremy Christiansen, Superintendent of LCC School and Building Blocks board member, who emphasized the connection between early childhood education and the future success of local students. “Investing in our youngest learners means investing in the future of our schools, our workforce, and our entire community.”
Keith Knudsen, Building Blocks board member, spoke to the larger impact, saying, “This isn’t just about childcare—it’s about supporting families, strengthening our economy, and making sure no parent has to struggle alone. When we invest in families, we invest in the heart of our community.”
After the ribbon cutting, guests toured the center, met the staff, and saw firsthand the welcoming, enriching spaces where children will learn and grow. The excitement in the room made one thing clear, this isn’t just an opening, it’s the beginning of something special.
Although Building Blocks door technically opened Jan. 27, Building Blocks is ready to continue serving families and welcomes community members to continue supporting its mission. For more information, visit www.buildingblockslaurelne.com.
Building Blocks is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) early childhood and family development center created by and for our community. With a mission to provide high-quality, affordable care for local families, the center is built through thoughtful planning, strong partnerships, and shared vision for what our children deserve.
Before turning to the community for financial support, the organization worked diligently to secure funding by applying for and receiving $1,050,000 in grants, along with $375,650 in local pledges to cover a significant portion of the building project. The remaining funds necessary for this project are $1,124,400 in the form of private pledges.
Today, Building Blocks is sustained through the incredible generosity of local donors and the unwavering support of our community – individuals, families, businesses, and volunteers- who continue to invest in the future of our children and the strength of our hometown.
As a family development center, our mission extends beyond the children enrolled in our care. We are here to serve the broader community – offering resources and support to in-home childcare providers, connecting families to services that are often difficult to access in rural areas, and helping parents navigate the early years with confidence. Whether through direct care, shared resources, or educational partnerships, Building Blocks exists to strengthen families and build a brighter future for generations to come.
