April 6, 1950 COLERIDGE — A crowd of men and women estimated at 775 came to Coleridge Tuesday evening to be guests of Coleridge businessmen at Farmers Night.
About 500 were in attendance at the banquet and program at the Legion Hall and 275 ladies filled the Joyo Theatre for the movie.
As cooks and waitresses, members of the Coleridge Commercial Club probably are a bunch of clumsy, awkward men, but actual serving of the large crowd at the Legion Hall took exactly 13 minutes (officially timed). However the businessmen were given able assistance in the serving by those in attendance. April 6, 1950 COLERIDGE — Two Coleridge youth attending Wayne State Teachers College were recently named to fraternities at the college.
Earl Felber was one of 15 elected to Epsilon Pi Tau as a neophyte at the April 1 meeting. Donald Hunter was initiated into Lambda Delta Lambda Fraternity on March 20. April 7, 1960 COLERIDGE — It couldn’t happen but did. After having a brief glimpse of spring last week, which resulted in the melting of most of the snow, a heavy rain, which began falling last Thursday, turned to snow late Friday afternoon and dropped four to five more inches of wet snow over the region adding to the spring road woes. April 7, 1960 COLERIDGE — Athlete of the Year Awards were presented to Roger Fleener and Neil Willms at the All Sports Banquet held Monday evening at the Congregational Church Basement.
Fleener had been outstanding in track and football and Willms in football and basketball. Ordinarily only one award is given. April 7, 1960 LAUREL- Saundra Mallatt, a junior at the Laurel High School, has been selected to attend Girls’ State in Lincoln. she is the daughter of Marie Mallatt. April 7, 1960 LAUREL- A picture in the Advocate shows a display of spoonbill weighing from 17 to 40 pounds, caught by Dean Karnes, Jim Linn and Don Kraemer. They came home with 11 fish after a day at Gavin’s Point Dam. April 7, 1960 LAUREL- All-conference basketball boys picked to represent at the Lewis and Clark Conference meeting were Regg Ward and Dale Erwin of Laurel. April 7, 1960 LAUREL- For 1960, 57 farmers added acres to the Conservation Reserve in Cedar County.
This makes 21,856 of Cedar County soil to be kept out of crop production seeded to grass.
To compensate for reduced income, an average of $14.14 an acre will be received by the producers.
April 2, 1970 LAUREL- Cheerleaders for the 1970-71 school year will be Nancy Dirks, Kim Gowery, Rosemary Hirschman, Val Hirschman, Yolanda Kraemer and Kim Matthews. April 2, 1970 LAUREL- Tim Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Hansen was chosen as alternate to Boy’s State. April 9, 1970 COLERIDGE — Following a heavy turnout of voters at the polls Tuesday the swimming pool bond issue failed by a very narrow margin.
A total of 282 persons voted in the school district election and 216 turned out to cast ballots in the municipal vote. The pool question was settled with a “For” vote of 108 and an “against” vote of 106.
Although the election carried on a popular margin, a required 60 percent is necessary for a municipal issue to carry.
In the Village election Robert B. Yost and Dean Benson were named as Trustees for the next four years. The School District 41-R election saw William Leapley and Marvin Domina elected. April 9, 1980 COLERIDGE — The Coleridge community and residents of parts of Northeast Nebraska woke up Thursday to find a fresh blanket of seven to eight inches of wet, heavy snow had fallen.
