WAYNE - The Wayne State College Wind Ensemble and the Nebraska Brass Band (NEBB) will perform a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Ramsey Theatre, located in the Peterson Fine Arts Building at Wayne State. The performance is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed.

“A collaborative performance of the final movement of Ottorino Respighi’s ‘Pines of Rome’ offers students the opportunity to perform with some of the best musicians in the area,” explains Dr. Josh Calkin, http://www.wsc.edu/watch-live director of bands at Wayne State. “Pines of Rome,” with its trumpet fanfares and timpani pulse, depicts the Roman army marching into the city.
Central to the Wind Ensemble’s program is “Symphony No. 1: A Ghost Story” by Randall Standridge. Lightning-fast and moderately aggressive, this piece evokes diverse emotions, such love, loss, guilt, forgiveness, and remembrance. The dramatic tale of a composer’s wife and widow challenges the ensemble’s technical skills. The group is conducted by Calkin, a seven-year member, current principal tuba, and assistant musical director for NEBB.
Based in Omaha, the NEBB is the only British-style brass band in the local area.
Their unique sound incorporates whisper soft passages and powerful fortissimos. Entertaining performances showcase a breadth of musical styles, including original symphonies, light classical, jazz, Broadway music, solo concertos, and more. The 34-member band has attracted professionals from across the state and beyond.
