HARTINGTON - The Hartington-Newcastle track teams had a pretty successful day on the track April 1 in the Cedar Catholic Invitational with the Wildcats grabbing third on the day and the Lady ‘Cats coming in sixth.
Battle Creek ran away with both of the team races with the Braves in front of the Trojans, 174-82 and the Wildcats next with 58 and Bravets were 163-72 ahead of Bloomfield in the girls’ race.
Hartington-Newcastle posted 49 points. Cole Rosener and Mason Krause had busy and successful days for the Wildcats.
Rosener was second in the 200 and 400 and placed third in the long jump while Krause won the triple jump with a best of 39-feet-6.5-inches, was third in the high jump and fifth in the long jump.
Maximus McCray was fourth in the triple jump behind his teammate and Will Feilmeier was sixth in both the 100 and 200.
The ‘Cats also had enjoyed some success in the relays. As the races got longer, Hartington-Newcastle moved up on the podium.
The 400-meter relay team of McCray, Feilmeier, Landon Clark and Aiden Heydon circled the track once for fourth; the 1,600 squad of Krause, McCray, Jason Heimes and Feilmeier did four laps four fourth and the 3,200 quartet of Issac Santiago, Dane Gotch, Aidan Anderson and Gabriel Reyes did eight laps in 10:03.00 for third.
Ty Opfer scored in the pole vault with a sixth-place finish.
Vayda Lippert had a great day in her very first varsity track experience outdoors.
The Lady Wildcat freshman won the high jump after clearing the bar at 4-feet-10-inches, placed second in the 400 and third in the 100 to account for 24 points all alone.
Carmen Buschkamp placed second in the 3,200 for eight points.
Hazel Hochstein placed fourth in the pole vault and Ella Eickhoff was fifth in the 300 hurdles.
The three Lady Wildcat relay teams also improved as the races got longer.
The 400-meter team of Kora Kneifl, Karissa Bruning, Emily Climer and Ell Haug was fifth; the 1,600 team of Lippert, Kloe Fischer, Hochstein and Maddie Steffen placed fourth and the Lady Cat’s 3,200 squad of Buschkamp, Climer, Haug and Jaden Opfer placed third.
The ‘Cats and Lady ‘Cats were scheduled to host their own invitational on April 8 then stay right here in Hartington for another meet, this one the Trojan Invite on April 15.
