1970: Trio of Bear basketball players are honored

LAUREL — Madsen’s Mobil Service was sold this week to L.W. Reynolds of Laurel.

LAUREL— Terry Stewart attended the DeKalb corn banquet in Norfolk. It was for the junior yield contest, honoring the winners of each county. Stewart won a blue ribbon, a pen and pencil set.

LAUREL— Roy Dickey and Clarence Johnson represented Cedar County at the Farm Bureau Rural Education Conference held at Lincoln.

LAUREL — Lt. Michael S. Matsukis was selected by the Commandant of the Nebraska Military Academy to be one of four tactic officers who will operate the academy this summer for the National Guard and Army Reserve.

March 26, 1970

LAUREL— Steve Erwin, Rod Erwin and George Schroeder have received many honors for the Laurel Bears since the end of the basketball season.

Steve, a junior, was named to the all-state team; Class B all-tournament team, the West Husker all-conference team. He was also selected to the Channel 9 all area team.

He was the leading scorer for the Bears with 568 points. Rod Erwin, a senior, was named NENAC all-conference second team and West Husker all-conference team.

He was the third leading scorer for the Bears with 304 points. Schroeder, a sophomore, was named to the Class B all-tournament team; the Nebraskaland all-conference team and West Husker all-conference team. He was the second leading scorer with 563 points.

March 26, 1970

LAUREL — Seniors, Jane Kvols, Debbie Brandow, Sue Schaer and Ann Peterson accepted the first place trophy after defeating Randolph in the NENAC tournament.

Schaer and Brandow were named to the alltournament team. Schaer had the most points for the tournament with 25. Kvols had 23, Brandow and Jean Haskell had 20 each.

March 26, 1970

LAUREL— Steve Erwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verdel Erwin of Concord will represent Laurel at Boys’ State.

Kevin Leapley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Leapley of Belden will represent Randolph at Boys’ State.
