1965: New elementary building dedicated at ceremony

75 Years Ago - April 6, 1950

RANDOLPH – People in Randolph are “generally cooperative” when they are questioned by the census enumerators, Mrs. Henry Lenzen and Mrs. Helen Wintz, reported this week.

They with thousands of other enumerators, began their work on April 1, all have four weeks to complete their task.

The local enumerators report few cases of difficulty, with some people resenting the asking of certain questions.

People are urged to cooperate fully with the census enumerators and answer all questions honestly. They may do so without fear of any of their answers begin revealed. Enumerators are under oath to reveal none of the information taken by them. Every fifth person is questioned concerning his or her income the past year. *** RANDOLPH – Spring work is retarded in this area due to the wet soil, but most fields are now drying rapidly and will soon be ready to be worked. Temperatures the past week have averaged slightly below normal, with much windy weather. There were heavy snowfalls in some parts of the state, but the Randolph community received no snow and only sprinkles of rain.

Practically no seeding of oats has been done in this section because of the wet soil, and some reports stated that the frost was not yet entirely out of the ground.

The weather has been unusually windy and the temperatures decidedly chilly in this section, with the mercury dropping below 25 on some nights. Warmest temperature recorded at Norfolk the past week was 60 on April 1.

Consideration of a building program was started early in 1963, and an election on the proposed bond issue in the amount of $298,00.00 was held April 23, 1963. The proposition was favored by nearly 75% of those casting votes.

Construction of the building was completed in time for the opening day of school April 24, 1964. *** RANDOLPH – Interest in the local election scheduled for Tuesday, April 6, is mainly confined to the school board race, where four candidates are in the running for two vacancies on the board.

Two candidates running for council seats in the city election are unopposed.

Board of Education candidates include the two incumbents Eldred Pentico and Melvin Ehrhardt. Also on the ticket are R.E. Rodgers and Mrs. Varedo Huwaldt. The two persons elected will serve for a term of three years.

RANDOLPH – LaVern Scott was selected as the new chief for the Randolph Volunteer Fire Department in action taken on Monday evening.

Scott replaces Russ Van Slyke who served the department for 35 years, including several years as chief, who retired at the March meeting of the group.

Besides Scott, others selected to lead the local fireman’s group were: Assistant Chief, Larry Lackas; Salvage Chief, Kenneth Reineke; Vice President, Paul Loberg and reelected secretary-treasurer was Rick Anderson. *** RANDOLPH – Mother Nature pulled an early April fools’ joke on most portions of Nebraska, including the immediate Randolph area on Saturday when she dropped an estimated four to five inches of snow.

The snow started locally about noon on Saturday, and continued into the evening hours, and lasted until approximately noon on Sunday when finally the snowfall subsided. During the afternoon hours on Saturday the snow melted as it hit the warmer ground. By darkness, when temperatures cooled, snow started to accumulate.

By Sunday morning the area was covered when early risers prepared to attend church services. By midafternoon a large portion of the snowfall had melted and by Monday morning most of the accumulation had already melted. Highways in the early morning hours were icy and snow covered that made traffic precarious as at least one traveler in the early morning hours on Highway 20 found when his pickup ended up in the ditch because of the slippery conditions.

RANDOLPH – An application for a $2,500 grant has been submitted to the Greater Randolph Community Foundation for the purpose of funding the non-profit status and filing fees to start a community based daycare/preschool center.

If funds are awarded, the project will move forward with the first phase. An area needs survey will be conducted that closely follows guidelines being used by the Northeast Nebraska Economic Development District.

“If the results are positive, the committee will begin work on a site location, funding and design,” Gary Van Meter, Community Development Director, said. *** HARTINGTON – An attempt to oust Cedar County Commissioner Jerry Wiese from office has failed.

On March 2, William A. Heitman, Laurel, filed papers with the Cedar County Clerk’s Office to have Wiese removed from his position.

Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling said the recall petition needed to be returned to his office by April 2.

“The petition has not been returned. We didn’t get anything. I never heard anything from Heitman,” Dowling said. “They would have needed to have at least 585 signatures on the petition.” *** RANDOLPH – Randolph is being spiffed up just as the springtime weather begins to wash over the area.

Work is being completed at the Randolph swimming pool and bath house.

Repairs will be made on the showers, stools and urinals. Pipes in the chemical room need to be repaired as well.

Ladders in the pool have also been replaced.
