1960: Area farmers declare holiday, take Urwiler trip

March 31, 1960

COLERIDGE— A quick thaw of the record snowfall has caused considerable trouble in the rural areas.

Temperatures in the 40s over the past week have made bottomless quagmires of most of the roads where adequate drainage is unavailable.

Lowlands have seen considerable amounts of water and in some places roads have been completely covered.

Most travel of the rural residents has been limited either to tractors or trucks with chains. Even then, many reports have been received of these vehicles being mired down and a need of assistance having been made.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Fire Department had a busy day Tuesday when they were summoned for assistance by fire departments from two neighbor towns.

About 11 a.m. the Hartington Fire Department was summoned to a grass fire at Wynot, which was burning southwest of town.

They answered the fire call with all units and called Coleridge to assist with a standby fire truck in the town of Hartington.

The Coleridge city truck responded and was stationed at the Hartington Fire Hall.

About an hour later a second call came from the scene of the fire at Wynot when high winds threatened to drive the grass fire into the town.

The fire had burned a swath about a mile wide. The Village of Coleridge responded to this call by sending their town tanker with a load of water.

The fire was contained, however, by the time the tanker reached its destination.

The trucks had hardly returned when the Laurel Fire Department called and needed assistance at a grass fire about eight miles east of Coleridge where a high-line had broken starting a grass fire.

This fire burned about two miles and destroyed a granary and then blackened an area of about 160 acres.

Winds estimated at 60 miles an hour fanned the two blazes.
