LINCOLN — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge sixth grade Lego League team competed at the State Lego League Competition in Lincoln over the weekend.

The sixth grade team was one of 11 teams nominated for a Nebraska Innovation Award out of 89 teams, and won an Engineering Excellence Award for overall performance.

The students were to come up with a solution to a themed problem. This year it was ocean/marine based problems.

The seventh/eighth grade team decided to focus on helping keep manatees safe from boating injuries by developing a hydro fence that acts like cattle guard and the sixth grade took on solving illegal fishing by creating wearable QR codes that could be scanned by a drone from the air helping free up ranger resources and make it easier for fishing licenses to be scanned aerially and then fish can be logged by anglers using an additional QR code on the back.

In addition to the project creation and presentation, each team competes in the robot games.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School Lego League introduces students in grades four through eight to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface.

FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.

Those students attending were able to design, build and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology by applying Copy

real-world math and science concepts, research challenges facing today’s scientists, develop critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills.

Students were then able to participate in tournaments and celebrations.

Members of the LCC sixth grade LEGO team include: (back row) John Dietz, Braxton Reimers, Grant Brummels, Liam Recob, Rhett Egger, (front row) Easton Gould, Drake Jairam, Kylee Bloom, and Summer Burns.
