Indoor track season begins for Cedar Catholic teams

WAYNE - The Cedar Catholic Trojan and Lady Trojan track teams opened the 2025 track and field season in the Wayne State High School Indoor Meet on March 21 in the brand new Wayne State Dome on the campus of Wayne State College.

No team scores were kept in the meet, but both Cedar Catholic squads had rather productive performances.

“I thought we competed very well,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Blair Kalin. “It was an early meet so we just had kids do a couple of events. Our girls have a chance to be a strong team if we keep improving and working hard. Our boys are a little behind due to state basketball, but should start improving with more practice time.

The Lady Trojans earned a couple of first-place finishes from sophomore Anisten Wortmann.

Wortmann raced 200 meters in 26.68 seconds for the win over Maya Dolliver from Pender who clocked a 27.11.

Wortmann also won the long jump hitting the sand after a leap of 16-feet-10-inches.

Lauren Bernecker won the open 400 with a time of 1:02.72.

The Lady Trojan 4X400 relay quartet of Kally Becker, Brynn Bernecker, Wortmann and Lauren Bernecker placed third as did the

4X800 squad of Becker, Madison Eickhoff, Kendra Schmit and Claire Rolfes.

Eickhoff was fourth in the 800 with Rolfes right behind in sixth, Brynn Bernecker placed sixth in the 200 meters.

For the Trojans, the 4X800 relay team of Nolan Becker, Hunter Kuchta, Matthew Loecker and Kighter Wortmann won with a time of 8:49.69, nearly 20 seconds in front of the runner-up, Stuart.

The 4X400 relay team of Myles Baller, Kuchta, Cooper Hochstein and Loecker placed fourth.

Kighter Wortmann and Quinn Hochstein were both third in the 800-meter run and the pole vault respectively, while Kuchta was fifth in the 400.

Booker Hochstein was fourth in the long jump with a best of 18-04.25 and Alex Elks placed fifth in the 1,600 as did Jared Rutar in the shot put.

Nolan Heimes was sixth in the triple jump. Cedar Catholic will resume its track season in another indoor meet at Mount Marty in Yankton, SD on March 27.
