LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School Board hired Heath Johnson as the new elementary principal with a vote of seven “yes” – two “no”.

Johnson, who is currently the K-12 principal in Banner County, will replace Stephanie Petersen who held the position of Elementary and Middle School Principal.

Salary for the fulltime position was set at $74,000 plus benefits.

A requirement of the contract is for the principal to live in the school district.

Action was taken to fill several positions by board members.

Sixteen applications had been submitted for principal position, according to Supt. Randall Klooz.

“We looked at all the applications and brought it down to eight candidates that we thought were very well qualified. The names were then given to a company that helped with the hiring process,” Klooz said.

The Crown Global Consulting was also given a list of qualifications for the new principal explaining what was important to the other elementary teachers and the community.

The consulting company narrowed the selection down to two individuals.

High School Principal Jay Vance, T.J. Shiers and Klooz conducted interviews with the two individuals. The final selection was then presented to the school board members.

LAUREL — Football is on the schedule for the fall of the 2015-2016 school year at LCC School.

A number of students have made a commitment to play football, according to Supt. Randall Klooz.

“We are trying to build an 11-man football schedule,” Klooz said.

Ten incoming freshmen and 14 students who will be in either the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades have signed and returned the consent forms to play football for the Bears next season.

Seven more students who will be in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades have made a verbal commitment.

The decision on whether freshmen will play varsity football will be up to the coaches, Klooz said.

Athletic Director Scott Petersen was asked for his opinion on the safety of some of the helmets.

“Helmets that are used have to be certified every year,” he said.

“The theory on the Flex Helmet is that some shock absorbency has been built into the helmet.”

Board members were given the information on bids for football equipment.
