COLERIDGE—Mr. Steven Liakos, presently employed by the Stanton Public School, has been hired as principal of the Coleridge Community Schools for the 1970-71 school year.
Mr. Liakos, a graduate of Alliance High School and Kearney State College, was a four-year letterman in football at Kearney State, wrestling letterman, and a member of the Choraleers, selected touring choir, for three years. Mr. Liakos and his wife, Betty Jo, have two children; Ami Jo, 2 1/2 years, Kip Steven, 8 months. The Liakos will move to Coleridge around June 1.

LAUREL- The Laurel Fire Department was summoned to the Jack Rasmussen farm, north of Laurel, Sunday afternoon to extinguish a burning haystack near the feed lots on the place.

LAUREL— The Laurel Bears received runner-up in the State Class B Basketball Tournament when they were defeated 78-69 by Cozad. Steve Erwin and George Schroeder were named to the All-Tournament team.
They scored 63 points a piece tying for second high in the tournament.

LAUREL — Instead of the annual Easter egg hunt, March 27, the Laurel Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Fun Day at the city auditorium.
March 20, 1980 LAUREL- Five buildings will be demolished to make room for the new Security National Bank building. The buildings succumbing to progress, the Medical Clinic, Monson and Gubbels, Casey’s Car Wash, Urwiler and Malloy’s storage building.

COLERIDGE—Rev. Robert Neu was presented a new camera last week at the regular meeting of the Coleridge Commercial Club for his efforts as head of the local clean-up and fix-up campaign. Lyle Thomas, president of the Club also presented the plaque recently won at the National Beautification Contest won in Washington, DC.

COLERIDGE—The double elimination playoffs in the Hartington City League started last Wednesday evening. The Corral 2, led by Russ Janssen with 17 points, defeated Bow Valley 53-46. Janssen was credited with an outstanding game on both offense and defense. In other play The Corral 1 downed Tootie’s 47-43 and Bow Valley then eliminated Tootie’s from further action.

COLRIDGE—The Coleridge Music Boosters donated an electric piano to the School Music Department. Karla Milander and Brenda Anderson presented musical numbers with the piano at the Pops Concert Tuesday.

LAUREL- Laurel-Concord has established a reputation as one of the finest schools of its size in the state. A little luster was added to that reputation this week with the selection of Mrs. Mildred Monk as one of three statewide winners in the Omaha World Herald’s Nebraska Outstanding Teacher Contest.

LAUREL- Superintendent James Lofquist and three teachers submitted letters of resignation to the Laurel-Concord Board of Education at the board’s monthly meeting Monday night. Junior high social studies teacher John Held, who also served as head boys basketball coach and assistant football coach, resigned after two years at Laurel-Concord. Elementary teach Mrs. Mildred Monk is retiring after 25 years of teaching here, while instrumental music teacher, Galen Arbogast will also depart after one year here. Lofquist will leave after 16 years in the Laurel community, one of the longest tenures ever for a Laurel school superintendent.

LAUREL- Laurel’s last remaining clothing store will stay open following the purchase of Touch of Class by Lanita Recob and Jean McCorkindale.
Mrs. Recob and Mrs. McCorkindale purchased the combination store and beauty salon from Sis Brandow and took over Feb. 26. Jean has worked as the beauty salon’s only hairdresser for the past two years but had not until now been a full partner.

LAUREL- Seven Laurel-Concord basketball players qualified for the Clark Division all-conference. Laurel’s girls especially dominated the lineup.
Gail Twiford and Wendy Robson made the first team.
Renee Vanderheiden qualified for the second team and Michelle Joslin receive Honorable Mention. Among the boys, Scott Rath was voted by the loop’s coach to the second team while Brent Haisch and Mike Forsberg received Honorable Mention. Several of these players will be back to lead the Bear teams next year. Twiford who led the conference in rebounds, is only a sophomore as is Haisch and Joslin is a junior. All three promise to be among the league’s stars next season.

LAUREL- Dixon defeated Laurel 24-10 to advance to the girls finals Friday in the Dixon Recreational Basketball Tournament going on this week. Deb Roeder dropped in 12 points to lead the winning effort Monday night. Also scoring for Dixon were Amy Peters-seven; Patty Roeder- 3 and Rachael Guenther-two. Also playing were Nicole French, Trisha Bathke, Brandy Hintz, Beth French, Mandy Hartung, Kathy Pierce and Kelly Yeager. Laurel was led by Amy Adkins with six points, while Amy Newton and Sherrie McCorkindale popped in a basket a piece.
