LINCOLN — Two familiar foes clashed at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Friday night with a state championship game berth on the line.
The Wynot Blue Devils and the Wausa Vikings met for the fourth time this season in Friday nights Class D2 State semifinal game.
Since the team’s knew each other so well, coaches and fans expected nothing short of a dogfight in this one.
Three point shooting was a big factor in this game with the Blue Devils gaining a 10-4 advantge from behind the arc.
Wausa kept the game close with free throws hitting 16-20 from the charity stripe while Wynot hurt themselves leaving a lot of points at the line hitting only 9-25.
Both teams were tight to start the contest. The Vikings got five points from Matthew Schindler and a pair of baskets at the low post from Preston Schlote.
Wynot started slowly also as they got layups from Carter Hans and Lane Heimes but then Justin Heimes drained four three pointers to give the Blue Devils some breathing room building an 18-10 early lead.
In the second quarter Wynot got a trey each from Devin Brummer and one from Kotner Koch plus some free throws.
Wausa would stage a rally with five points from Colton Baue and three pointers by Braden Bloomquist and Preston Scholte as they cut the Blue Devils lead to 26-23 at halftime.
The score continued to remain close in the third quarter.
Wausa got five points from Matthew Schindler, four free throws from Lincoln Thorell and a basket plus one by Jake Munter.
Wynot countered with five more points from Justin Heimes, a trey by Cooper Oligmueller and a basket plus one from Andrew Haberman to hang onto a slim 39-37 lead..
Wausa got a trio of regular baskets from Mac Carlson and one each from Jake Munter and Matthew Schindler. The Vikings also hit 5-6 from the line down the stretch.
Wynot got two huge three-pointers from Killian Steinhaus, a pair of baskets in close by Kotner Koch and one by Justin Heimes.
Wausa went to fouling late and the Blue Devils went cold hitting only 4-11 from the line but it was good enough as they advanced to play O’Neill St. Mary’s in the D2 State championship game at Pinacle Bank on Saturday.
