LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School cheer team completed its second sideline season and experienced its first competition season since the program revival in the fall of 2023.
Prior to that, it had been over a decade since LCC had a cheer team.
In addition to cheering at football, volleyball, and basketball games and planning pep rallies, this year’s squad of five traveled to Ralston Jan. 25, and Bennington Feb. 9, to compete before participating in the 2025 Nebraska State Cheer and Dance Championships in Grand Island.
The team competed in the game day and non-tumbling divisions.
Game day routines are three minutes long and include a band chant, situational sideline cheer, crowdleading cheer and the school song.
Non-tumbling routines are two minutes and thirty seconds long and consist of a dance section and cheer section.
Coach Vanessa Schurman expressed her passion for cheer and appreciation for the cheerleaders.
“I was so excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this new program,” Schurman said. “Coaching at the high school level has been new for me, and I have been blown away by these young ladies. I am so proud of their dedication to this team while they continue to participate in other school and community activities.”
Tryouts for the upcoming school year will be in April, and practice will start in June.
Last June, the cheer team did face painting during Ag Days at the Laurel City Park. Schurman said she would like it to be a tradition, and the team plans to do the same this year.
