LAUREL — The Hartington-Newcastle speech team inked its name into the record books Monday as the first school to ever win the Greater Northeast Nebraska Activities Conference Speech Invitational.
The HNS team easily out-distanced runner-up West Holt, 296-194 to claim the title.
“We are very proud of the students. Everyone competed hard, and I think that showed positively in the results,” HNS coach Kyle Stevens said.
Of the 10 events in Monday’s competition, HNS came home with seven gold medals and four silver medals.
“These kids have clear goals and each of them put in the work it takes to accomplish team goals like winning conference,” Stevens said.
The team put 17 of 20 entries into finals. "It was a complete eort and a reflection of each students' talent and work ethic. We still have work to do to get ready for districts, but I am excited to see what this team can accomplish,” Stevens said.
