1950: 100 mph winds knock down wall

75 Years Ago - March 9, 1950 RANDOLPH – Over two-thirds of the east wall of the Carhart Lumber Co. collapsed Tuesday afternoon, leaving a gap of 75 feet long and 12 feet high in the tile wall. The north door of the areaway of the lumber yard was blown in, pushed out by the terrific gale. Shortly after two o’clock, a peak velocity of wind was registered at 100 miles per hour at the official weather bureau station in Norfolk, and it was about that time that the wall collapsed.

R.J. Krieger, manager of the yard, announced the damage was estimated at about $2,000.

The chimney on the bakery at the Cornhusker was blown down Tuesday morning, causing considerable damage and no baking operation could be carried on Wednesday.

60 Years Ago - March 4, 1965 RANDOLPH – There are a total of four vacancies on the Randolph City Council and Board of Education this spring, however, to date there are no candidates for the offices as no caucuses were called and the deadline for holding caucuses has gone by.

If there are to be candidates to fill the vacancies on the two boards they must be placed on the ballots by the petition method.

City Council members whose terms expire this spring are Roy Gibson, who represented the south ward, and Norbert Olberding, representing the north ward.

The terms of Eldred Pentico and Melvin Ehrhardt expire on the Board of Education.

50 Years Ago - March 6, 1975 RANDOLPH – Lisa Kluver, Randolph High senior, has won a Regent’s Scholarship to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. The announcement was made to the Randolph Times by Jack Ritchie, director of the NU Scholarships and Financial Aids Office.

The scholarship, which is for fully paid tuition is renewable annually depending on scholastic achievement.

Miss Kluver won the award based on scholastic aptitude test given at Norfolk by University officials last October. 5,378 Nebraska seniors took the S.A.T. tests at varying locations in October 1974.

40 Years Ago - March 7, 1985 RANDOLPH – The new organ that parishioners have been patiently waiting for at St. Frances Catholic Church was installed last week.

The new pipe organ was built for St. Frances by Don Newman of Seward and took about 1 1/2 years to build. The organ has 621 pipes and was used for the first time for weekend Masses on March 2 and 3.

The parish has been taking donations since August of 1981 and voted in February of 1983 to purchase the new pipe organ.

HARTINGTON – Marvin DeBlauw and Jerry Widenfeld posed several questions to the Cedar County Commissioners during their regular meeting. Many of them dealt with the county roads department.

During the Thursday morning session, the commissioners reviewed an employment agreement with Cedar County Road Superintendent Jerry Kavanaugh. After some modification, the commissioners and Kavanaugh signed the contract which contained the following provisions for his employment: - wages will be $550 per month; five days a week, half days 7 a.m. to noon - furnished with telephone credit card - own transportation will be furnished at 20 cents per mile - benefits of three weeks vacation, 30 days sick leave when ordered by doctor, all insurance and retirement benefits - fully liable for all Cedar County Road Superintendent duties which are: one and six year road plans, budget, on and off system bridge inventory and on the spot survey of each bridge, getting the minimum maintenance roads completed, finishing the work up on the flood declaration No. 716 until completed

30 Years Ago - March 8, 1995 RANDOLPH – The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest Championship Region #5 Shoot was conducted on Sunday at Creighton. Participants came from 18 communities in Northeast Nebraska with KC Council #1238 of Creighton hosting the event.

Advancing to the State Competition in Loup City on Sunday, March 19, will be Catrina Korth, in the girls age 12 group. She is the daughter of Doug and Barb Korth of Randolph.

Jim Backer, son of Richard and Sandy Backer of Randolph, earned runner-up honors. *** RANDOLPH – Randolph Area Foundation Inc. Board of Directors met at the Ventures building on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The group decided to create a plaque with name plates to recognize donations and memorials made to the foundation in the amount of $1,000 or more. Definite location as to where this plaque will be placed is undecided.

A memorial book for all donations will be left at Johnson Funeral Home for public viewing.

20 Years Ago - March 9, 2005 RANDOLPH – Councilman Mike Dowling presented a new drawing for the proposed ball park concession stand when the Randolph City Council met in regular session on Wednesday, March 2.

This new plan is a scaled-down version which will help reduce material costs, Dowling said. Furthermore, Cinda Jones, city administrator, said she is looking into new lights for the softball field. Discussion on the baseball field grass also took place.

Tom Bailey from Complete Pest Elimination of Newman Grove was on hand to present his mosquito spraying plans for the summer. The council approved the extermination to begin in May with larvae elimination near creeks and standing water. The actual spray will be applied once a week from June through Sept. with a cost of $1,200 per month.

Dan Backer and Tim Kint attended Wednesday night’s meeting to address the council about Randolph Public School track improvements. The two board of education members requested permission to file several grant applications through the city. Kint advised that these grants for track improvements are only available to communities and closed to schools.

10 Years Ago - March 11, 2015 RANDOLPH – The Randolph City Council decided to increase utility rates at their March meeting.

The Council also gave the mayor the authority to sign a letter of agreement for an alternative flood control study, and took steps to move ahead with Tax Increment Financing for the city.

The decision to raise utility rates for electric, water and sewer was based on a study which had been done on utility rates. The new rates are based on recommendations that had been made by rate consultant John Krajewski of JK Consulting in Lincoln. *** RANDOLPH – Randolph resident Tim Kint has been awarded $5,000 Quality of Life Grant for the Tricounty baseball program.

The tri-county area’s “Mr. Baseball,” Tim Kint was presented a check at the Wednesday Randolph City Council meeting by Randolph Area Foundation President, Peggy Leiting. Kint is one of only 13 percent of all agents eligible for recognition to apply for the Million Dollar Roundtable Foundation grant.

The $5,000 grant recognizes Tim’s contributions to community youth service. *** RANDOLPH – Elementary Principal Mary Miller spent Monday up on the roof of the school.

Back in September, she made a deal with the students in the Accelerated Reader program.

She agreed that for each book they read, they would receive a “hat” with their name on it. The hats were pasted on the wall in the school. Miller told the students that, if the hats made it all the way around the school, she would spend a day on the roof of the school.
