HARTINGTON— A proposal asking the residents of Hartington to approve the issuance of bonds for the construction of a municipal swimming pool probably will be submitted to the voters at the April 5 City election. An organization known as the Hartington Swimming Pool Association was formed by women of the city to promote the construction of a pool here. They have announced they will circulate petitions asking support of the proposal and a vote on the question at the coming city election.

LAUREL— Two grain elevators at Laurel were broken into last Friday night but the loot was small, Sheriff John Riibe reported both places were entered by breaking panels in doors.

The Laurel Feed and Grain lost about $15 taken from a cash register. The knob was broken off a safe in the office but the thieves were unable to open the safe. Nothing was reported missing from the Chederquist Elevator which was also entered.

Sheriff Riibe said law enforcement officials were unable to obtain any clues.

HARTINGTON— With only two county offices to be voted on at the May primary election, there appears to be a dearth of interested candidates. The deadline for filing as a primary candidate is March 11.

The terms of county Judge Edward Hesse and Leonard Kurtzhals, county commissioner in the second district, expire this year. Both are candidates for re-election. So far only Kurtzhals has opposition.

Arnold Bartels of Belden has filed for commissioner against Kurtzhals, Both men are Republicans.

Judge Hesse filed some time ago on the non-political ballot.

HARTINGTON— Winter continued its icy grip on this area the past week and new snow Tuesday and Wednesday made road conditions slippery. The light texture of the snow made it susceptible to drifting. Temperatures dropped to five and six degrees below zero the past five days and the highest reading recorded was 21 degrees above Monday.

The Hartington area has had approximately 15 inches of snow since the first of the year and this piled on top of the late December snowfall has left the countryside covered with a blanket of snow measuring more than a foot in most areas.

Drifts are several feet deep in many places. Seventeen below-zero days have been recorded at the Hartington weather station since Jan. 1. The coldest was 21 below zero Jan. 5.

Measurable precipitation has been recorded on nine days and traces reported on many other days.
