Wynot upsets top-seeded Wausa for title

WAUSA — The Wynot Blue Devils and the Wausa Viking had split their games in the regular season with Wausa winning in their first match up and Wynot winning in the Lewis Clark Conference championship game. On Thursday the rubber match would be all Blue Devils as they raced to a 20 point halftime lead and kept that lead in the second half to earn the sub district D2-3 title by a finals of 61-41.

Wynot was once again led by Devin Brummer as he hit 5 three pointers to take top scoring honors with 17 points. Justin Heimes had a solid game as well connecting twice from distance and also working the inside to finish with 16 points. Andrew Habeman, Cooper Oligmueller, Killian Steinnhaus all contributed to the bombardment from long range for the Blue Devils.

Wausa was led by Brady Bloomquist with 12 points, Matthew Schindler hit a pair of threes on his way to eight points and Preston Schlolte used his big body to create space on the inside and finished with seven points for the Vikings.

Scoring was slow early. The Vikings got a basket each from Jake Munter, Matthew Schindler and Kayton Anderson. Wynot went on a late burst in the first quarter with a pair of treys by Devin Brummer and five points each from Justin Heimes and Nixen Heimes as they built an 18-8 early lead.

Wynot opened a big lead in the second frame with seven points from Justin Heimes, two more threes by Devin Brummer and five points from Andrew Haberman for a 23-11 run. Wausa got a pair of threes by Brady Bloomquist, a basket by Schlote but found themselves trailing 41-19 at halftime.

In the third quarter the Vikings tried to rally. Brady Blooomquist scored six points, Matthew Schindler hit a trey and the team hit some free throws. Wynot got four more points from Justin Heimes, a three-pointer by Cooper Oligmueller and a bucket each from Andrew Haberman and Killian Stienhaus as the Blue Devils maintained a 53- 31 advantage with one quarter left.

In the fourth quarter Schindler hit a trey and Schlote and Bloomquist hit inside for the Vikings. Wynot maintained the margin with a three-pointer by Steinhaus and five more points by Devin Brummer as they cruised to the 61-41 win.

WAUSA — The Wynot Blue Devils had some trouble taking down the Santee Warriors in their SubDistrict first-round game here Tuesday.

The Blue Devils were able to pull away late in the game to earn the 73-60 win and advance to play Wausa in the championship game on Thursday.

Santee got an outstanding game from Tasunka Starlin who poured in a game high 32 points. Christian Torrez and Akeska Starlin helped keep the game close with 13 and 11 points respectively.

It was the long ball that was the difference for the Blue Devils as they rained in 13 three pointers for the game led by Devin Brummers eight treys for 24 points on the night. Kotner Koch worked the baseline and offensive glass to finish with double figures with 13, Killian Steinhaus contributed 11 points to help the Blue Devils cause. Cooper Oligmueller just missed double digits with his trio of threes.

The Warriors got a trey each from Tasunka Starlin and Christian Torrez along with four points from Akesha Starlin. Wynot countered with a trio of three pointers from Devin Brummer and conventional baskets from Killian Steinhaus and Nixon Heimes to earn a 17-13 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Starlin boys each hit for 4 points in the second quarter and Christian Torrez drained a three pointer for Santee to provide their offense. Wynot got two more from distance by Devin Brummer and four points from Killian Stienhaus to maintain a 3125 halftime advantage.

Both teams heated up in the third quarter. The Warriors were led by a big scoring explosion from Tasunka Starlin as he poured in 13 points in the quarter. Wynot kept pace, however as Kotner Koch worked the paint area for eight points, Cooper Oligmueller hit a pair of threes from the left wing and Devin Brummer hit yet another three from downtown to give Wynot a 56-46 advantage going into the final period of play.

The Warriors would not go away quietly as Tasunka Starlin stayed hot. He hit for another 10 points and Christian Torrez had a pair of putback. Wynot got balanced scoring with Devin Brummer draining two more treys, Oligmueller hit his third of game along with one from behind the arc by Kotner Koch that made the final tally 73-60.
